New to 1st gen, not to RX-7 Help me (long)
I hope someone can help me. I just picked up an '81 for a song. Here's the problem, the car sat for a year, the fuel pump was about dead so it was replaced, with a universal in-line pump, which is working just fine, also a new fuel filter. The car fires up with some throttle manipulation and runs fine when the RPM's are kept above 1000K. It does have a slight occasional hiccup, but that's probably because it needs plugs and stuff. Well, after peering into the engine bay, I noticed that the air pump is missing the belt, so inoperable. Otherwise everything is bone stock. When looking into the carb when running, it appears as though the smaller barrels beneath the choke plate are not atomizing evenly, actually the barrel nearest the front of the car look as though it is dripping fuel, and the rear one is atomizing. Also the larger ones are doing nothing, and the butterly beneath them isn't moving regardless of throttle position. I know nothing of carbs. The previous owner claims that the carb was rebuilt right before he parked it, and it does appear to be clean and in excellent shape.
Sorry this is so long, I have only had 2nd gen's and thus am clueless as to the carbs on these 1st gens. Also I am planning to remove the rats nest in the next few days and get rid of the emissions system. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hit me up on AIM if you can! djmtsu355
Thanks guys

Might be worth taking the top off the carb and giving it a quick clean job...
I had issues with really unequal fuel delivery that required simply cleaning/tweaking...
(In fact, my carb was spilling gas down into the engine even when it wasn't supposed to--- my floats were out of adjustment)
Also, the larger set of butterflies won't open usually unless the engine is under load....
Read up on Vacuum vs Mechanical Secondaries
The one beneath them is related to smog control, IIRC (somebody wanna back me up or tell me I'm crazy?)

Here's another quick question, is the fuel pump supposed to run constantly when the key is on? I know it has a return, but I am just curious. Also I bought all the basics for a tune up, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, cause I know it can't hurt. As per advice of a few of my FC and FD friends, I will be using NGK 7's & 9's for leading and trailing respectively. Is this a good idea? Like I stated before, 2nd gens, Good, 3rd gens, OK, 1st gen, no clue.
