Unhappy Need some help

My 85 1st gen, hasn't be starting when I checked under the distributer cap I noticed that (the oil pump chain?) seemed to be loose. I'm not sure it a link is busted or it just slipped off the gear. Is this something that would keep the engine from turning over? If so how much would a repair cost me roughly? I appreciate the help...I miss my baby

The oil pump chain is typically like that. The deflection in the chain is something like 1/2" to be considered normal. It is probably fine unless the chain is completely off.

You don't need one. When you stated that it does not start, does this mean all the time, some
times? Are you getting spark, fuel? What are the symptoms?

No start

Are you getting spark out of both the trailing and leading sides? What's the history on the car.? Was it starting and running fine, then started acting up? What, if anything has been done to the motor recently?. IE: Did you just change ignition components, wires, plugs? Need all the info you can supply. Have you done a compression test?

Yes getting a spark on both sides. Bought it from an old lady who was the only owner no engine problems at all. I got new spark plugs, and wires that's all. I get great compression. The car just won't turn over. I hope I don't need a new engine.

Sorry for the late reply classes are killing me.

Is the starter whining? Could have a seriously gnawed down starter gear.

Is the engine spinning? if not, carbon lock?

Busted flywheel teeth?

Since you had the distributor out, are you sure you installed it correctly. Btw, the oil pump chain has nothing to do with starting or timing, as it does in some piston engines. If your guage is showing good oil pressure, don't worry about it.

It would help if you provided more details. Carb/FI, when or how the problem started, have you checked your plugs, have you flooded the engine, etc.?
