Need a Quick Reference - Fast Idle, Choke

Hey Guys,

I don't have my manual, and I'm not sure that it would apply to what I'm wondering if I did.

The question that's going through my mind is : What should my car be idling at when I start it up and pull the choke ALL the way out.

- With a stock carb?
- With Rx7Carl/Sterling's Supercarb (no choke plate, but fast idle attached)

Lately my car has been starting beautifully, I pull the choke out, let it "idle" high and within five minutes it pulls the choke **** back in and it's all good. But when I pull the choke all the way out it goes *way* high, like above 3k... so I've been only pulling it like half or three-quarters of the way out (to achieve about 2k).

Is this normal? Should the car be warming up above 3k? or should I keep doing what I'm doing and make it warm up at 2k by only pulling the choke partway? Should I adjust my fast idle linkage so that it idles at a certain speed when pulled full-out? Does my complete lack of a choke plate affect this?

Jon

Thats normal. You dont need to pull it out so far though. Just out enough to keep it running.

I agree with Carl. Pull it out all the way just to start it (no throttle, just choke works for my car) and before it revs up above 2K push it back in. I have mine around 1700-2000 for warmup.

Okay then, good to know that I'm normal

That's what I was doing, pull it out then push it back until it drops to 2k.

And this is a newbish sounding question (but remember that I only started driving my car this year) but when you first start it, it's normal that it'll try to die without the fast idle **** pulled out right? Everybody has to go through the same 5min warmup process?

And yes, I know it's called the choke, but without a choke plate, I call it the "fast idle ****" . And don't think that I'm complaining about the warmup, I know it extends the life of the engine, so I don't mind doing it.

I let it sit about 30 seconds. Watch oil pressure stabilize, then start driving. 5 min isint necessary. With fast idle set it will run even cold.

Mine start up, at 3K for the first minute and then drop I blieve to 2K and hold there for 3mins and then is done. I turn if off for 1 minute to defrost the throttle and then turn it back to go driving.

So I drive with the choke out for a while? hmm...

Oh well, I'll remember that for when I go driving. Right now, with the car grounded by the Quebec Safety ***** I've just been starting it 2-3 times a week to keep everything running. I let it go until it pulls it's own choke in, then finish whatever song is playing on the radio and turn it off.

It's quite motivating to spend 5 mins sitting in your car and actually hear it running - something which it couldn't do last year!
