need new engine, any suggestions
after many days of denial i compression tested my engine and it is a big pile of crap, but I just got a glass sun roof(not with propper brackets even though it was supposed to have them but that is easy to prefab I already have made a new plate but need to figure out the right bolt size) But anyways my engine is running like ****, I need a new one and I want someting fast, I have an 85 GSL and wondering how difficult a swap to a 13B is or if there is a comparable turbo 12A available. What are the most cost effective options in your opinions, or should I just try to rebuild one of my 3 fucked 12a's, any links to good engine sites would be helpfull. Thanx for the time ,

well FI is not that hard or expensive its the computer that rapes you get a stocker and its a bitch to hook up and make work. Get an aftermarket good one and your going to spend out the *** just for the computer. Then you have to tune the stupid thing .... sounds like I am working myself more and more twords Carb

Atkins has a video on rebuilding. I bought one of their rebuilt engines through ATK. Delivery was uncoordinated (engine arrived before the ATK's computer showed that it shipped). Also Atkins requires many things for the warranty to remain valid (radiator rod out, oil cooling flush, radiator pressure test, radiator back flush,) which require a professional mechanic. Other routine maintenance is required (three month oil+filter changes, OMP volume, sparkplug inspection....) can be done by a shade tree mechanic.
My Atkins Motor has been ok after 6 months. E-mails were answerred within 24 hours. However I've heard the full gambit from good to bad about Atkins.
Whatever you do, don't loose the timing mark. Mark top dead center on the little center hub, then remove the pulley to paint the marks. The pulley has 4 possible positions.
Also take lots of pictures has you remove stuff in order to remove the old engine. White labels were useless when coverred with grease. And that 200 pound engine was a bitch to get up a flight of stairs. |When my car is over 25 years old and I don't have to smog it, I plan on installing a street port or better from Atkins.
Good luck

QUOTE=Rx7carl]Cost effective? Rebuild. Port while your at it.[/QUOTE]
I agree, port while rebuilding one of your 12As is the way to go. With carb modifications and a good header/exhaust system you will get around 180hp very useable in the street.
A 13B would be marginally better giving about 7% more power, but you would be buying an engine which would need a rebuild in the near future. You could cut some cost by using a Nikki carb from one of your 12As.
There are a few 12A turbo efi engines imported from Japan but there will be some costly mods needed to install and have running.
Follow Carl advice.

Speedracer- have you come across the problem where the authorities argue its the age of the engine not the car that counts? The example I know about was when a gen 2 engine was put in a 79, and it had to pass pollution tests.

Who would be crazy enough to put a new engine in an old car like that?
"I don't know what kind of engine that is, all I know is the car came like that when I bought it. I swear!....wow you inspect all these car yourself....that is really something"

where would I get a seal kit and how do I tell if any of my other internals are ruined, any one know of a site with the procedures on porting, the thing is I dont want to waste money on seals and find that other parts of my engine are unuseable, the one that I will probably rebuild has only 65000 km, but has been sitting for several years, is there a step by step out there that I could get and what should I watch for in wear when I open it, do I just replace all the rotor seals or are there bearings and other stuff I will need any spec's on porting would help as well thanx for all of your inputs as I think I will try it my self but dont want to make it shitty, how hard is the rebuild and is there any thing that I could really **** up sorry about the repetition but I'm trying to think and type at the same time and I cant type woth a ****, thanx again to every one who has given in put hope to hear from every one again sometime peace out!

I was gonna sayjust throw a V-8 in it if you are strapped for cash, however my flame suit is in the cleaners so I am not going to say that. Re-build yourself and save the cash.
