???NEED INFO - FROM 12A to 13B???

helloW ppl, i really need your guys help on this one, i currently have a 1984 rx7 GSL, the engine needs a rebuild without a doubt. So, my origional plan was to ship my engine away and get the whole rebuild and so on and so forth.

But,
i was reading the local classifieds the other day and came across a 13b engine and tranny for sale, runs very strong, i can get this for a very good price and would save me tons of money and hassel.

Also he will sell me anything else i need for the whole swap (fuel injection, carb etc etc)

So basically my question is, i have no clue wat else to get for the swap, so if you guys can tell me everything i will need to buy extra with the engine and tranny, and give me a heads up on any major modifications i will need to do, i would greatly appritiate it.

Also, do yous think this is a really good idea?...and on a scale from 1 to 10 how hard of a job will this be haha.

THx alottT,
and P.S i am absolutly dieing to drive my rx7 and have it on the road for the summer so im literally praying this will all work out hhaha, im sure yous no wat its like:/

....Joe

I would go ahead and get the 12a rebuilt if I were you. It seems like you already had your mind set that you were going to get it done before you came across the 13b. While they are rebuilding it, you should ask them to streetport it. You get mroe power than the stock 13b you want, and it is a new engine w/ warranty. Plus, you dont know how the 13b was taken care of, do you? That would mean tons.

hey

yess i know wat your saying, but heres my sitchuation,

i have to ship my engine a couple thousand kms away for the rebuild and such, and this 13b engine is only an hour drive from me lol.

so it almost seems like an easier route, he said the engine ran really strong, im going down monday to do a compression test on it.

so if the engine turns out to be in very good shape then i think im going to go ahead on it.

Thx for the input

Hmmm, I'd go with the 13b. I'm in the process of finishing up my build and throwing it in. Oil pan and front cover for mounting are the 2 main hurdles. The rest is simple especially if you go carb'ed.

I think all you gotta do is transplant the front cover and pan. I like the idea of replacing the 12A with the 13b. More power, and the 13b trans has a better ratio 5th gear.

if youre gona get the transmission along with the engine and its straight out of an fc youre gona need to get the shifter relocated becuase it will not match up...u can use the shifter off ur 12a trans but i dont know the exact details of the adjustment BUT the 13b should jus bolt staright on to your current tans bell housing if ya cant be bothered messing wif the shifter location.

also with the engine ur gona need a new sump but thats been already said

...and then theres the usual stuff like different engine mounts (13b sit 20mm closer to the front than 12a's from memory...i could be wrong, but they are different mounts) then ur prob gona have to get ur extractors modified to fit ur current exhaust, same with the carby manifold and the wiring loom modified aswell

apart from that its pretty much bolt in!

and correct me if im wrong coz im talkin from an aussie point of view...duno the specs of the american imports lol

hope this helped you out abit...def go wif the 13b i did and have never looked back!

As long as the transmiission is out of a 86-88 N/A model the only thing needed is to swap the tailshaft housing over from your FB trans.
89-91 N/A transmissions you cannot do this and TII trans are a whole different story.
All of this has been covered a thousand times though.
