You can file for lost title, I did this on a Ranger about five years ago, just get with the DMV and go from there, not exactly sure who exactly to call but they can steer you in the right direction, hope this helps

and try to get a bill of sale from whom you bought it from, never know if you may need it.

in geogia i had a policeman come to the house and run the vin, to make sure it wasn't stolen. he filled out a form for me to take with me to the dmv (dept of motor vehcile) along with my bill of sale, so i could register it... the person that i bought my car from wasn't the last person to register the car, so the dmv required this form... good luck!!!

I don't know about texas, but here in oklahoma, we have what is reffered to as a "Title 42" sale. Basicly, it's a mechanics/storage lein. After 30 days, a registered letter can be sent to the registered owner, notifying them the car will be sold, and the amount of the lien. If they do not respond within the specified time, the car can be sold to anyone, and the paperwork mailed to the state.
The buyer will recieve paperwork to take to a tag agent, and will be issued a title at that time.
I bought my car from an impound lot, and got a free and clear title after a 5 week wait for the paperwork to be processed.

go to a junk yard and buy a 78-85 x7 They give you the title OR!!!! buy a parts car that has a title.
You swap the vin's, take the old junk car cut it in half!!!!VERY IMPORTANT.
Bring the 2 piece car to a SCRAP YARD!!!! they dont need a title for a 2 piece car i did this with a firebird i had and it worked great
TOTAL COST MAYBE $400.00
No bill of sale needed!

Only problem with your suggestion, legalities aside, is the main VIN # is stamped in the firewall. What are you going to do about that?
