Need Help Installing Shifter!!
You can take the block off without taking the tail housing off... don't let carl scare you. The tail housing is really just a cover for the *** of the transmission. There's nothing to it.
I've got a haynes manual, so i guess I'll tear into it if you guys say it's not that bad.
However, I"m still stuck on my original problem with the shifter... lol. What do you think my chances are of finding someone who has a junk tranny and having them get the shifter components out of it for me? Is it likely that someone may have something like that that they'd be willing to sell me, or am I going out on a limb here? I imagine a parts yard wouldn't do this as they want to sell the whole tranny, but do you guys know of anyone here on the board that would be willing to do this? I"m gonna go to the dealer tomorrow and see what I can find out, but more than likely they'll want an undisclosed amount of cash and my first born child for a shifter spring.
Lemme know what you guys think about my idea.... Gonna go work on my storage bin cancer now... thanks for your dedication to my moronic thread guys, haha.
It is appreciated.

No go look at the online Mazda FSM. Nice detailed trans teardown in it. The haynes dont cover this as its not a common thing to mess with. Check for the price on the spring. Its prolly not alot.
Yeah, I remember asking what the dealer charges for an 84-85 shift ****...brand new... it's only $35. Or that rubber plug for the inspection hole in the bellhousing: $5.
Some of their prices aren't *that* unreasonable.

Okay, the part number (at least according to this old pdf I have sitting around) is 17 465C or M501-17-465B. Looking at the picture in the book, yours *does* look right, but what you have to do is attach one end the little hole in the block that holds the shifter.
Then, it'll have to be put under tension to get in place. and only one side should be showing to hold onto the shifter. This isn't well explained, I know.
