need help building 1st Gen FAQ page

So many members, new and experienced alike, ask the same ol' questions over and over again. To help put a stop this and get those FAQ's answered quickly, I'd like to see a sticky page at the top that only deals with FAQ's. Below is a list of some FAQ's that I think should be covered. Can you guys point me to what you think are the definitive threads on these or other subjects that I've missed? Thanks!

- Engine Oil (if I see one more of these I'm gonna freak'n scream)
- Gas
- Idling issues
- What does SA, FB, FC, FD mean?
- Oil Leaks
- Exhaust Systems
- startup smoke and high rpm smoke
- LSD swap
- Rust!
- Clutch
- electic fan
- premixing
- tune up
- suspension parts
- transmission oil
- GSL-SE FI issues
- TII swap

TIA! :)

Rx7carl 11-01-03 02:47 PM

Bob, why not get them to just use Felix's FAQ? And you'll nevarrrrr get consensus on the oil issue. Kinda like the turbo vs SC. ;)

82transam 11-01-03 07:33 PM

I find most threads get cluttered with useless babble most of the time. It might be best to have people submit writeups then pick the best ones and make a sticky useing those posts, and make it so people can't repspong directly in that thread, keeping the clutter down. Most of what you have on that list could be adequatly described in a paragraph or two (per subject of course) I wouldn't mind typing a few up, and one I'd like to add to the list is the oil cooler swap for the 83-85 12a cars, seems like everyone always has a few questions about that.

I couldn't agree with you more! This is precisely what I'm looking for. Please post your write-ups in this thread or PM me with what ya got! :bigthumb:

Northern 7 11-01-03 09:57 PM

I think a FAQ section is a great idea but I don't think it hurts that the new members like to ask questions. This is a forum, not a text book - folks like to chat it up every once in a while, regardless of the topic or how many times it is covered. BTW, I learn something new ever time some one starts an "Oil" thread - it wasn't that long ago that nobody would dare mention the word "Synthetic" - now it's being used more and more by members on this forum. A lot of these topics evolve over time and the process of evolution usually occurs with someone posting a topic that has been covered a thousand times. Keep dem oil threads comin:D

Rx7carl 11-01-03 10:33 PM

Good point Northern. :beerchug: didnt think about it that way. We do need to evolve and keep up with technology and advancements. It's a fine balance between finite issues and ones that are more open. Remember that Bob. I'm too one track and need to be reminded once in a while about that sometimes. :)

inittab 11-01-03 10:54 PM

Thanks for the feedback Northern and your point is well taken. If you take a look at the FAQ that I've started, you'll see that it does link to threads that are still open for discussion. My hope with the FAQ is to educate folks quickly on the basics so we can all have intelligent discussions about these subjects.

Northern 7 11-01-03 11:03 PM

Like I said guys - Great Idea! Intelligent discussions? that'll be a break through - JK;)

Gatorgunner 11-01-03 11:29 PM

what about the purple rx-7 with the body kit question. That seems to come up every couple of weeks

FD Racer 11-01-03 11:30 PM

-wheel fitment questions
-atf / MMO
-DLIDFIS
-SE brake swap
-OMP
-Cold Air intake
-Alternator

Jeff20B 11-02-03 12:40 PM

So who wants to do a DLIDFIS writeup?

MosesX605 11-02-03 12:42 PM

Well, I've got a modest DLIDFIS thread, with pictures:

It's in the FAQ now! Thanks!

I'm looking for a good MSD 6a thread. Can you guys help me find a good one?

MosesX605 11-03-03 09:43 AM

Well, this on the Mazspeed board, but they always put up good tutorials:

http://www.mazspeed.com/msd.htm

It just occurred to me that you're on mazspeed.com too inittab, so you probably already know about this page. (Shrugs)

This is a long overdue development Inittab, great work on the FAQ!

Great idea!

Sterling 11-04-03 07:12 AM

I would really like to see a cut 'n dry list addressing the
"How much power will this make?..." question.
Maybe just a real simple numbered list of the power progression starting with (something like)-

Stock-----------105 Flywheel HP

Stockport w/ RB header & exhaust-----220-225 HP----------$780.00

Stockport w/ RB exhaust & aftermarket carb------145-155 HP ----------$1180.00 - the moon

Streetport w/ RB exhaust & aftermarket carb--------

...like this all the way up to FI TT2 whatever. All usual configurations of the rotary.

Thanks Sterling! Yup, that's a good one and it's now in the FAQ.

inittab 11-05-03 03:07 PM

Can anyone point me to a really good: I wanna buy a 1st Gen what should I look out for thread?

Sterling 11-05-03 05:24 PM

I just spent an hour searching, and though there's a dozen "o.k." threads that brush on it, there really is no one "thread of threads" that combines all of the troublespots to be aware of while making your first purchase.

...Perhaps we should all make an effort and start one, great, ultimate, final thread on the subject...

diabolical1 11-08-03 07:55 AM

i think this is good idea. i like what you did with the page inittab. i do miss the getting to know you sticky, but ... i guess it's the curious fool in me.

anyway ... i just thought about 3 threads that i had always wanted to see expanded and/or kept.

the first is a thread on upgrading electrical/ground wires by RotorMotorDriver Electrical Wire Upgrades

the second is a thread on Rx-7 upgrades First Rx-7 Upgrades

the third was thread by Revhed that dealt with an electric fan upgrade, it was a dual-puller system, but for some reason i had trouble finding it. maybe someone else will have better luck, but i think these have the potential to be great threads for newbies and veterans alike. i say potential only because there are some that goes off on tangents (like the digital circuit thing in the wire thread, :D) but for the most part i think they can be built on like the super legend SE/Turbo thread.

i'll try to see if i come up with any other thoughts on threads that i thought were good.

Good one! I added this to the FAQ.

Random 11-10-03 12:04 PM

Someone posted a very detailed set of instructions on adjusting the stock steering box...that would make a great addition to teh FAQ, IMO.

inittab 11-21-03 10:20 AM

I just updated the FAQ with some of Mazdatrix's FAQ's. Thanks for the suggestion Rx7carl! :)

Gatorgunner 11-21-03 02:53 PM

you should post a link to Howstuffworks.com for the people that are new and ask how a rotory engine works.

inittab 11-21-03 08:04 PM

Good one Gatorgunner! I put it up near the top. Thanks!

Gatorgunner 11-21-03 08:31 PM

no prob

mar3 11-22-03 12:53 PM

After poring through this corner, the archives and then the FAQ page, there is a big glaring hole regarding clutch swapping, ie., can you put a a '79 - '82 clutch kit into an '83, for example and why not. Can it work the other way and why not. The pictures of the different flywheels seem to suggest there should be no concern despite the 10 mm increase in clutch diameter that occurred from '82 to '83....

brianw 12-08-03 06:02 PM

Anyone interested in a FAQ on inexpensive performance mods? I have been looking and it could take days if not weeks to find them all and even then to put them in the order they sould be done, Performance gains, and so on. I am new to beefing up rotors but would like to know these things myself. I think a simple to read list w/links to each mod would be really nice.

inittab 01-19-04 12:25 PM

Kudos goes out to slashdawg00110 for submiting the crankcase venting FAQ. :bigthumb:

Thanks!

Q. Why do I need to vent my crankcase?
A. To prevent the "lung mustard" and rusty filler tubes that you get with unvented crankcases.
Here are some links that talk about why you need to vent with vaccum: ( A ), ( B ) and ( C ).
Some guys (peejay) are fans of using PCV valves instead, here are some links that describe
the proceedure: ( 1 ), ( 2 ) and ( 3 ).

Wankelguy 01-19-04 01:03 PM

How about flywheel/counterweight interchangeability?

Rotofire 01-19-04 01:31 PM

.....turbo has to come up somwhere. Cost? how? why? where? what not? sombody just needs to do a final write up on putting in a turbo....or a TII swap.

Yes! Do you have any thread suggestions?

MosesX605 01-19-04 01:55 PM

Flywheel info is included in Felix Miata's FAQ page, but it's not very clear, IMHO.

Zach McAfee 04-16-04 10:23 AM

Back from the dead...
How about Weber carb tuning? I was just looking for it in the FAQ, and couldn't find it. Specifically starting jet sizes, ect.

thefunksyourbrother 06-09-05 01:36 AM

Don’t see a Drag Page on this RX7 Forum??? I been doing a lot of reading on here and Wow you guys talk talk talk about Right way and the wrong way for everything on all 3 Gen’s. But No Drag Page. Nothing gives me more of a Woody than seeing RX7’s Doing a Drag. I can’t be the only one building one??? I got about 25 WMP movies and I watch them every night before bed time with my honey. THAT IS MY QUESTION! AND WILL I GET A ANSWER??? ( then again I am a dork ) = ) Drag on the Brain, Methanol waiting to be pored in the tank. TheFunksYourBrother.

Alternator FAQ entry for upgrading to FC/FD alt in 1st gens. Maybe reference thispage as a starter.

Sorry to revive a dead thread but I am hosting all FSM from 1971 to 2008:

http://foxed.ca/foxed/index.php?page=rx7manual

Thought it could be added to the FAQ.

blown7 03-04-08 09:32 AM

You could add the S4 transmission swap to the page. Here is the link to the tread i started about doing the swap.

orion84gsl 03-05-08 07:36 AM

One suggestion I have is a few pages, each dedicated to maybe 10-15 personal experience reviews on all the common carb types for the rotary. One for all Holley's, one for Webers, one for Sterlings, etc etc. I've seen a few "Carb A vs Carb B" threads and I figured this would get rid of those. One quick PM to the poster and he's got all the info/opinions he wants. There would have to be strict rules of course. ie: only post if you have owned or driven such equipped car. Nothing like someone with one carb jumping in another thread and talking smack about whichever other carb. All posts like that get removed. Once it reaches an acceptable number of replys the thread gets closed and moved to the FAQ section for later viewing. All the reviews can be bundled together and there anyone can see which carb they want to know about.

Also Mazda says to use 87 Octane in all non turbo cars up until the RX-8. Anyone thinking they will get more out of using race gas is wasting their time, unless of course their timing is hella advanced.

djessence 03-05-08 01:21 PM

This is a fairly old thread. im Assuming this is what got the FAQ page made?

Since it has been brought back. Maybe it is just me but ALOT of the articles in the archives are repeats or full of nothing and dead links.

A bunch of threads say go to this link for ______. And the link does not exist. Could we clean those up/get rid of them?

As well is there any chance to clean up some of the method threads like "my chronicle of a TII swap kinda thing. The long threads that are full of wow great job and cool never thought of that and random shite like that. Cuz you read through 17 pages of that and then find the answer you are looking for on page 19.

If it would help i would even go through some of these threads and make a list of post # that is unnecessary.

I know as a newer member, people say search. Fair enough i say it too. But when you find it in the archive buried under 17 pages of nothing it makes u just wanna ask. OR its a dead link and ppl call u an idiot and say see here! this thread is what you need but it accomplishes nothing

Sorry for the semi rant/constructive advice.

Any thoughts?

Please do, if you do not, then PM me!

Jeezus 03-15-08 03:48 PM

Also, CLEAN the FAQ page. Some have pictures that do not work, some had multiple threads of the same subject (exact same subject), lots of dead links, etc.

waysrx7 03-15-08 07:42 PM

I have noticed a few differences between the FAQ page in the archive and the 1st gen section. Either update the archived version or get rid of it; personally I see no need for it to be in both sections as it seems most of the new members who post havn't read it anyway.

I am nineteen and i have little money to work with on my car, but i do plan on hopefully having my 1980 rx7 looking the same way it did when my uncle who passed away recently bought it new, he gave the car to me and i recently put a new clutch in and still in the need of finishing my paint job. but other than that i am looking to add peformance upgrades once i am done with the paint. i have read a lot on the faqs page but what is the best things to start with since i do need to spend money wisely as of now. I no it is an old car and will take a lot of work since i have had three vehicles that is older than me. this car i am keeping forever since in means more to me than my 05 GMC. WHERE DO I START??

boyee 11-13-10 01:33 AM

well at least you did a search and brought up a thread that talks about the FAQs. Do your research on what works with your budget. We cannot really help you since you did not specify a budget range.

I found this in the FAQ for you though.. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=217446

Lots of good options to start with. Look into this and see what you can work with that will fit in your budget. Good luck to your project.

THANK YOU!
