Exclamation Need Help - 84GSL - loud cracking sound when revving the engine

been working on the car, it wasn't running, and finally got sparks on my leading plugs (bad ignitor), adjusted the timing, changed out all my battery cables, and now trying to adjust the idle / mix. I got the car running but now have this LOUD crackling sound when i rev the engine. Doesn't sound good. can you guys help me out ? engine's a stock rebuilt 12a on an 84 GSL.

Does it make the noise if you disable the trailing ignition?

I had an engine do that... with direct fire on the leading ignition and the trailing ignition accidentally reversed. Ran fine on the leading but the trailing was something like 190+ degrees advanced. Couldn't give it much throttle before it would detonate.

What kind of exhaust. Is on the car? Stock looking or aftermaket or hodge podge? I cant look at the videos but mine mis fired when i put caseys gas into it. Come to fined out they put way ti much ethonel into their summer mix gas. Also what mods do you know of or looks like that they did to the car?

by that vid, it looks like its missing at idle. when i had my 12a running smooth, there was no engine movement at idle, and i had it set at 750 rpm.

thanks guys.
peejay - let me try that. thanks for the idea.
coltdaddy - it's a stock setup, stock 12a, everything stock. going to test to see if there's any vacuum leaks, but i did think about running higher octane gas.
bikeordie - will try again with the idle and the mix - been playing around with it but haven't been able to get it steady, at 750.

87 to 88 octane is all you need unless you go forced induction. I wish i could see the vids but i cant on here. Does it rev up through the rpms to redline or does it not want to go further than a certain rpm? If so then its probally timing. If not then check for vacum leaks because a rotary motor with its high heat loves to melt caps and hoses causing leaks.

One thing I would try is to disconnect all the accessory belts in case that's the problem, just don't run it too long without the water pump. Do you have power steering or A/C?
