Need Help

Hello fellow 1st gen's. I have a 79RX7 that i rebuilt the carb on. After doing that it took me about two wks to get it started. When i finally got it running I messed up the fuel air mixture and was left trying to start it onn and on for over one year. I recently had it towed to Mazda to find out that they did not have the equipment or a tech to work on it anymore. I could use any help out their. I would like to be able to restore it one day, but I need it running right first. I live in Hampton Virginia and will pay.

We are gonna need more info than that...

What all did you try to get it to start?

Return the needles to factory specs?

Might just be flooded. Run a search on Seafoam, which can be helpful in getting them started again once this happens. Just an ounce down the carb then crank her up with a full charge on battery. Tow starting may be another option.

Turn idle mixture screw all the way in (gently), then out 3 turns to give you a starting point before you do anything else if you've been messing with that.

When I rebuilt the carb on my '79, I got the jets reversed in one of the float bowls. It still started ok, but ran bad when cruising. But you might want to double-check the jets.

I tried turning the idle mix screw in and then out 3 turns and i also poured a small amount of tran fluid down the carb. Well it started in on the first try, so I let it run for about two hours(that was sat 29DEC08). Sun morn I started it again and let it run for 1hr. ll it would do is make that thumping noise when you first engaged the ignition. So I took the starter off to have checked to find out that is was not good. I ordered a new starter and had it checked before I took it. I installed it and tried to crank it (10JAN08) and all I got was one click each time i tried. not even that thumping noise when u first engage the ignition. The battery is at 12.66VDC and i also had the alternator checked (good). Any help would be appreciated. and also if there is some one out there in the Hampton/Norfolk Va. area that knows a good first gen tech I would appreciate that info to.

Thanks again,
ken,

RP Performance used to be where I took my car to. However, they have now moved to outer West Virginia, borderlining Loundon County. If you want their number, let me know.

Thanks for your replies. I would like the # 85 FB, maybe they can give me a clue. Acid angle I tested the voltage form the starter positive to ground and got the same 12.66 VDC.

Still Stumped.

I had no idea they were open today. They're normally not open on the weekends.

Yes, bad cables will cause these issues. The stock cables are aluminum, and tend to corrode internally over the years. This is one of those items that really need to be replaced on any 7 which is still in use. Good luck...
