Only 3 moving parts.

That usually works, especially if you have a couple valves, springs, rockers, and pistons to use as a visual aid.

Pistons have to constantly change direction, rotors spinning are much smoother letting it rev faster and longer with less chance of damage.

Yes, but you're talking a race specific motor, I'm sure.

Not really... Anyone could pick up an R6 for 10,000 and ride it home. Thousands of them on the streets revving to 15k

Theres a great image in 'Rotary Engine' by Yamamoto, its got the major parts from a boinger laid out next to the major parts of a rotary. The rotary has fewer parts in it than just one head of the pistion engine.

Take a can, slap it against the wall, then repeat again.

Take a ball, roll it against the wall...

Which one has less friction and which one has to work the least?

and that is a motorcycle engine, with pistons around the size of a hummingbird. the bigger the engine the lower the rpms can go.

back on topic, my wife knows how a rotary works, and talks some major **** to people who dont with lines like, "ITS NOT A 4 CYLINDER. its a rotary, i know that and im a girl! wanna know how it works?"

"hey dude you're about to burn a snail on your exhaust, let me show you a real turbo(*as she points to a t2 or single turbo fd*)"

"Want me to play with your wankel?"
