with proper suspension, you can tuck it in. even then, a little 'stick out' actually makes the car look very aggressive. puny offsets make the car look, well, puny.

stock miatas have +45mm offset and can accomodate 0 offset wheels while FB's have somewhere around +27 i believe. with this in mind the FB can accomodate low offset wheels better than the miata can.

I have a set of 15"x7" watanbe's that I want to sell. I was going to run them with some high side wall tires for my DD but decieded that I should get a different style as I already run 16" watanabe's. They need to be refinished though, so I'll let them go for $500.
