I don't know if it's county by county or state by state, but here in Catawba county cars made before 1996 do not have to pass emissions tests. State inspection is required of course, but no emissions testing.

yup its different between the counties. I know up till last year they just had to be able to see the emissions parts installed(didn't check for any smog). Thats in onslow county btw

Here in Alamance, they don't do a smog sniffer (they actually don't have the equipment for that) so on older cars they just do a visual inspection. My 91 failed last year due to a rusty muffler, but as long as you've got a cat and mufflers in good condition, you should be okay.

Technically the place I go to is supposed to raise the car and check for exhaust components, but they just make me pull in there, horns, signals, head and brake lights. And I'm passed. If I came in sounding like a chain saw on crack they might raise the car and look though.

Well... try to get it inspected anyway, see what happens. And go to a small shop, not some chain like a Texaco lube place or something. They'll probably pass you anyway just to get the 30 bucks, if they don't at least you won't have lost anything. I did that with the aboved mentioned 91...got it passed on the second try.
