Well, here is the story, if I haven't told it yet....
I bought the car, with the exhaust separated right at the rear axle connecting point. It appeared to have been a cheap weld, and rusted apart.
Anyhow, it hung down a bit...but nothing ever scraped. It wasn't loud, even though it was pre-muffler......so I figured it would get me by til I scraped up some new exhaust money.
I was staying for a few weeks with a friend in Fargo, ND (4 hours away from me in MN), so I rented a Uhaul and pulled the Rx-7 on a trailer (all 4 wheels off the ground) to Fargo.
Somehow, on the trip, the wind caught the already loose clear driver's side taillight cover, and I lost it.
Anyways, I get there, and after I back the car off the trailer, I notice that the exhaust is now scraping a bit. Dunno what caused it to hang down anymore.....but it was.
I ran into an emergency with my infant daughter, and had to make a quick trip back to the Twin Cities. By the time I was leaving to MN...the exhaust was scraping alot. Well, constantly. I figured, since it was just the tip of the straight pipe touching the ground...it's no big deal......has to be replaced anyhow.
2 hours into the 4 hour trip.......I hear KABOOM! and I thought I blew a seal in the engine. (Ive never done this, and am new to rotaries, so I don't know what to expect....just what I hear on these boards). The car is now louder than ever....and I can't tell a noticeable pos/neg power difference.
I start coasting slower......just trying to listen to the car.........and then BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM the car is rattling, something is hitting the floorpan....so I pull off the road.
The entire section from what you see, back to the axle, has broken off, and is sideways, hanging by 1 rubber hanger, and what I believe to be the exhaust temp sensor.
Now, background on the car.....it sounded like a turbine. Not just the fan clutch sound.....but because of the pin holes in the cats....and what I know NOW was very clogged cats. If you can imagine the entire engine..JUST being a turbo spooling.....thats what it sounded like. I kinda liked it....made the car a little more fun to drive, to pretend I had a turbo. (For the first time, I didn't have to make the sound effects myself.....LOL)
So, the cats clogged like no tomorrow.....it's already leaking.......the temp has to be off the charts......85-90mph for 2 hours = Recipe for explosion.
Now, I wish I would have saved the exhaust (car was PACKED with belongings) or...at least took a pic, since my digicam was packed in there. But, I didn't. I just flung the leftovers into a ditch, crossed my fingers, and headed home.
What I know NOW is.....that I have more power. Thats how clogged the car was. I'm sure I am not running 100% the power the car should have, since I am lacking all backpressure.....but, the car works fine. Let's just hope the cops let me slide til I get it fixed.
We have no emissions in MN......so, I get to pollute away.

I'd definately say that a rotary engine still needs backpressure.
The big change is at the higher RPMs. Before, I could pull clean power straight through to the redline.
Now, it's as if you're not even accelerating after 4500.

not accelerating after 4500? stuck secondaries it sounds like... go mechanical
and no, rotarys DO NOT need back pressure... it just kills precious power...
im running open header, and its alot better thanthe stock system... hehehe......
No harm done in the whole 2.5 miles so far....

or, peejay said somthing about, different exhaust, different tuning....
they may have tuned it to pass emmisions, which fried the cat, which in turn, they retuned it, then it went bye bye...... play with the carb tuning... get an RB exhaust, when you can find the cash to spare......
go mechanical secondaries also... free mod....
