My tach is really screwy!
'83 GSL... Tach doesn't start working till the choke pops in.. After that it works really slow, and seems to stick at about 4k.. I suppose I can drive without it, but it would be nice to see how far to push the engine. How hard is it to replace the tach gauge with another one?
Thanks,
Matt

Mine does the same thing when it's really cold out. (aka I went too wash the car and the water froze before I could dry it cold.) Gradually comes back too full use after a bit of driving around though.
The heater I installed on the lower radiator hose seems too help a little bit (or the engine just warms up a shitload faster and gets the tach working)
No too big of a problem for me though, as I drive 20 mins of highway every morning, so I just take it nice and easy, weither my tach feels like working or not.
Oh yea, mines a 83 GSL as well

Replacing the tach isnt really bad, just getting the cluster open without breaking the front plexi is the hard part. Sounds like your tach is bad, I had one that would go to 0 to 8k, to 5k all over the place all the time, replaced the tach and it was fine...

The temp is 40 today, and everything started working perfectly... I just think the it doesn't like the cold... Oh well.

cold tach
its the temp. mine has been cold natured since i bought it. Summer time it always works fine. Winter time it is slow to warm up. Usually about five minutes after the heater starts blowing hot air it starts working fine.

the grease in the cable housing might be bit old. Try pulling the cable off and using a bit of motorcycle cable cleaner and then re-lube it. This worked for me when I first got my Rex.

Swap your leading and trailing coils and see if it clears up. The tach gets its input from the trailing coil, and as we all know coils are squirley when cold. My tach was spotty and would jump from 3500 to 4000 in about .1 of a second. I replaced both coils and now all good, car runs much better too.
