I bought a 1984 RX-7 GSL-SE off my neighbor, it has sat in his garage fo about ten years and hasn't been started. I took the car on as a summer project and want to turn it into a street racer first. I don't know the first thing about how to fix up the car(mechanical) all I know is how to fix the body. I'm planning on rebuilding the engine myself, getting the engine rebuilt at a shop or buy a new one if repairing the old engine cost too much.dose any body know where I can buy a nicer looking body kit the the same old erubini one? please help a fellow RX owner out with some helpful tips on what I need to do.

 

Well, lets start by welcoming you to the forum.
The first thing you need to learn is how to gather info. There is the FAQ site and the archive site for all info you are looking for. This is how you are going to learn about your car.
A rotary is no different than any other at starting with the basics for seeing why it won't start. 1st thing to check is for compression. 2nd is to check for spark to both the leading and trailing sides. Then check for fuel. Or the last 2 in whatever order you want. The 1st one is a must. How to check for all this is in the FAQ's and archives. Once you get thru the basics and determine which one you dont have besides compression. If there is very low compression or no compression in one chamber then your done at this point.

 

Hit the top of the page at the FAQ. There'll be a link in there for a writeup I did.

 

It's me again and I want to know how much does it usually cost to rebuild a 1984 GSL-SE engine? and how much is it to buy a brand new one off the web. what engine came with the 1984 GSL-SE?was it a 12a or 13b or what please help.

 

Have you actually looked under the hood of the car yet?

 

Or, by chance, read the FAQs? If you had, you would not have asked part of that question. Do your homework, summer school IS in session.

I dunno about 84RX_Se7en, but trochoid has been around ehre for a long time and is a well respected member of the community.

None the less, you should probably take a little more of a respectful tone with people if you're going to ask for help.

I've already told you where to look for information on the topic and so have they. I'm going to refrain from adding anything more to this thread if that's the attitude you're going to have.

 

Well, jr., I did give you appropriate advice. I don't consider my time here to be best spent babysitting or hand holding, unless it becomes technical or problem solving. If you can't take the resposibility to do basic reading/research/learning on your own, then you get politely pointed in the right direction. And it was polite with my odd sense of humor, such tender feelings you have, and I used a polite smiley face too. tsk tsk.

After you have calmed, read through the facts, familiarized yourself with some of the basics in the stickys, come back and ask questions when you really do need help.

 

Unless you respond quickly with a sincere and heartfelt apology, I would dare say that you are going to get nowhere in this forum. You have just slapped one of the top members in the face, for offering you advice that you came here requesting. Not too bright. This forum is a collection of information, not a doctor's office. If you are not willing to help yourself by doing the reading and research that has been pointed out to you already, then that is where your problem lies. We will be glad to help you as needed, but we are not here to spoon feed obnoxious inbred sons of dogs either (not meaning to imply that you are such, but if the shoe fits...). Considering how long your car has been sitting, there's a LOT of work ahead of you before you even consider touching the body.

When I started into my project, the car had been sitting for four or five years. Sitting is the worst thing a car can do because it's meant to move. Here's a summary of what I replaced in no particular order.

Springs and Shocks

Brake rotors, drums, calipers, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, hoses and hardware kit

Clutch disck, pressure plate, clutch master and slave cylinders

Inner and outer tie rods, adjusting sleeve with nuts, ball joints, idler arm, pitman arm, end links with bushings, sway bar bushings, control arm bushings, tension rod bushings

Fuel Pump

Had the carburetor professionally rebuilt (though yours is Fuel Injection)

Had the gas tank flushed to get all the old varnish-like gas out

Unsiezed the engine with penetrating oil/atf

Tires

Distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, plug wires

Air filter, fuel filter, oil and oil filter

Got the radiator re-cored

Thermostat and gasket

Transmission fluid, rear differential fluid, clutch and brake fluid

Battery replacement



And that's about all I can think of off the top of my head, but that should be most of it. There's alot more to a car than an engine and a body, and anything that's designed to move will sieze in place if it doesn't move for long enough.


In the FAQ (found as a sticky at the top of the first gen section), there's a link to a thread on restoring an rx7, you'll want to read that.

At the VERY top of the webpage is something labeled "FAQ" which should be labeled "RULES". In those rules, direct attacks are not allowed. I'm pretty sure that

is a direct attack, and seeing as I'm the moderator, I'm also pretty sure that means you've just been warned. Careful, you wouldn't want to get yourself banned just because you can't control your swearing and personal attacks.

This place is the place to be to learn about your restoration. All of the above I did from exactly the same starting point you're at. When I came here I didn't know anything about the mechanicals of cars, and now a few years later my car is practically new again.

Now just think.. if I had to type this entire post every time someone came in to ask a question about restoring a sitting Rx7, how long would I be at the keyboard? That's why I added it to the "Frequently Asked Questions", becuase it's a question which is asked frequently.

For body kits, I dunno. It's an Rx7 not a civic, mine prides itself on not having any body mods other than clear corner lenses, so that falls to someone else's expertise.

Consider your *** banned. I personally think that somebody should smack some sense into you. It "had" to be done? No, I don't think anybody ever has to be vulgar like that for any reason. I don't care what "hood" of NY you grew up in, respect for fellow human beings is something that everyone should have.
