My project 7.. Finally doing it. PICS
Well dad and I finally got going on her and now its moving along good, now that I got my hands on a MIG welder and some sheet steel and all the goodies to go with body repairs. Well I guess I can't put them on this site because there too big, and I cant compress the size of them anymore so heres my cardomain site all the pics are on there.
www.cardomain.com/id/greeddennis1 Click on the Blue rex and thats where the pics are.
Tomorrow i'm going to try and get the other two holes done and maybe cut a couple other rust spots out and form some steel up for it. This is my first crack at body repair, as well as rust removal of this sort and patch work.
This is going to be my baby for the next who knows how long till I am done it. And when im done, man is it going to feel good knowing that the work was done by me and my old man, its actually a good thing I got this 7 because dad comes out and helps so its making a better relationship btw us, one that was lacking before thats forsure.... Ever since I got this one I knew good things were to come because of it, hell my gf admitted that the car comes 1st before her haha I was like "thats right." Anyways Hope you enjoy the pics, I will set my camera up for not to high quality pics and then maybe I can compress them down to a reasonable size to add to just this thread as I acomplish new tasks.
Anyways, enjoy I know everyone likes pictures.

Terrified.
Nice. It is good to see someone taking care of their car like that. But something tells me that when you are done with it there will be so much sentimental value in it that you won't want to ever get rid of it.

very nice Great to see you doing your own work, its much more rewarding in the end too... and next time you get another car you can do the work yourself, but 3 times faster so eventually its just faster and cheaper to DIY once youve learned all the tricks!!
Looks pretty clean to start with, i wish you all the best with it!

Normality Glitch, yea my plan is to never get rid of her, I said that about my white FB but I think it has the same fate as the black one........ the junker. Its rust has dobled over ther winter, I think that in a year or two it'll crack in half, or at least lose the rear end if i do a burnout. So my plans are to take the elec. window, cruise, LSD rear, engine, tranny, and any other things I feel I need to keep and take them out of it and then I will be down to one FB. Maybe i'll get ambitious one day and could turbo that engine and then just drop it in the blue one. I'll see about that one though.
It's been fun so far, some swearing goes on but that happens to the best of everyone anyways.
Thanks for the replys guys.

I started out welding today and it was pretty shatty, but as the day went on it got better and better, and my spot welds were actually looking pretty good, not just a ball of puss all over the place. I got the drivers side done, just have to grind down some welds on the passangers side. Two holes down, three to go, on of which will be easy and the other ones well there in bad *** places and its going to be hard to get mew peices cut to fit and then weld w/o burning holes through stuff.

heres the rest of em, and I guess I left that bandaid on too tight and with moister under it for too long, but its coming back to life now. Thats what happens when the grinder wheel makes contact with skin.
BTW my office job does not help me any with this, I used to be able to go hard at workin on stuff for days on end and not be sore, now im a fricken puss compared to then. **** Im getting out of this sitting behind a desk and nerd burglering it up. The people there think im on drugs for workin, and talking about my 7 as much as I do. Im thinking about doing Heavy duty mech. or Millwright. Millwright is my #1 choice, b/c you get to do all sorts of stuff, and theres a good demand for them so thats my career change sometime here as long as I can find a place that will apprentice for either or. Anyone know of some places in saskatoon looking for those type of peoples???
Enjoy the pics.

Im guessing not because I most likly will be in stoon and I wont have anywhere to keep my stuff so ill be down to one 7, the one im working on now, my honda accord and the kawi.
It'll be a sad day when that comes, to think I had 3 FB's and one accord, one kawi motorbike, and one mazda b2600i ill be reduced to three vehicles damn it all to hell, owell I gotta save up some $$ for a 42" plasma or something of the sort cause im not going to be watching movies let alone playing PS2 on a 19" tv of my g/f's.
peace out, ill keep updating as the progress goes on.

Very cool work, BTW. It's good to see someone taking the time to do something right. I'll hopefully have my own resto thread up this winter, though my SA isn't as bad as that underneath. Or I hope it isn't, anyhow...

Great job! This thread gives me hope for my car. I'm in the process of getting a MIG. What type MIG are you using and is it 110 or 220? If it's 110, do you find you get enough penatration with it?
My car is much worse underneith, and I would scrap it if everything else wasn't so good. The only bad rust I have is the wheel wells, the rockers and the floors about three inches from the rockers on both sides. Also, a couple small holes in the trunk. Seems like a lot, but everything else is solid and the interior is perfect. Frame rails are untouched by rust. Mechanically she is excellent with only 40,000 km on her. Poor girl was driven for a couple years then stored on a driveway with no overhang for a long, long while.
One other question, where did you get the patch panels from? I found replacement quarter panels that go from the rear of the door all the way to the back lights, and up over the wheel wells about six inches - and they are only $100.00 each and 20 gauge steel. You can find them at JC Whitney's. The only thing I need to find now are rocker panels for under the doors and my car will look like new (I hope!).
Thanks for posting the pictures! It gives me a good idea on what I will be up against. I've never welded with a MIG before, but plan on doing a lot of practice before hand.
Keep up with the posting - it's looking great!

Tommaso-
I'm using a 110/120v MIG made by MAC using just mild steel wire i believe, and a canister of argon.
I'm actually very surprised at how well it works, I thought it would flip the the breaker like my little 110v arc does, but it didnt even using it for long time even on high settings. I've been using it on the lowest setting so far and it makes good penetration. I find it very easily to burn through the new and existing steel, just have to take it slow i guess and not go ape **** for long runs. And like you said with practing welding before hand.. DAMN GOOD IDEA, if you got some scrap pieces do it, try but welds, spot welds and perpendicular welds, and if at all possible try doing them all in most positions, because if your anything like me and you dont have a car lif to have it raised high enough to do it easily, your going to have to be able to weld in retarded postions with hardly any room to work with.
As for the patch panels, I'm just making them from scratch. I bought a sheet 2ft x4ft x i dont know the gauge of it but its the same thickness as the sheet metal on the car for $18. And it works great you can cut it with tin snips or use whatever you got. If you have a metal break or an anvil that would be kick *** for some things, but you can get away with a block of wood and a body hammer or just a regular hammer if thats all you got. It takes some time to do this crap, and lately ive been a pile of crap and didnt do anything much this week so far.
BTW some old guy in an impala this past friday was driving around and he stopped in the driveway while i was checkin the oil before heading out and asked "hey do you like those cars?" and im like yea i do. So he went on about how he has three of them and how he can get parts for dirt cheap from mazda. He said he got a brand new engine for $1900 straight up from the mazda dealership. I don't know when he got this i dont know where, becuase before i got to ask the guy his name or tell him to stop in some evening and check out my project 7, my mother had to of pulled up and was waiting to get in the garage and so the guy left. That kinda pissed me off.
Anyways i better get back to work here, 4 guys quit today, one of them being my boss, and another drafter, and two engineers. So thats why all this work showed up on my desk over the last couple days........ and to think I have an interview this weekend with another company so i can go live with my gf and be re-united with my new 37" LCD W/S TV that i bought on the weekend. Man its gonne be bad *** when i get the component cables hooked up and get some component cables for my PS2, as well as hook up the home theater too, **** ya!! its gonna be grand.

Good work! Nice to see you bonding with your dad. That will be the best part of this project. So quarter panels from JC Whitless? I'm gonna check it now thanks Tomasso.

Well I finally got off of my *** yesterday evening and got back into the "groove" again. So I chopped some more rust out and tonight I plan on fabbing up some pieces and fitting them. Ill be taking more pictures. Don't worry. BTW some dude that lives around where im at stopped in while i was working and we introduced each other and that stuff, and so he himself has had an RX7 and has worked on 3 nissan 280Z's, one of which he did what im doing now. Said he was going to stop by some time this week and bring some pictures and the such. Working on the 7 makes people come out of the woodwork i guess. I should have some more pics up by later tonight.

UPDATE!!!!
I got off my *** again..... and did some more cleaning underneath the car and then undercoating. Cut and grinded some more rust, and then made a new piece and welded it in man it was a pretty sad weld job, you can tell i havent been keeping up with the skills in the past week and a 1/2. I know it still looks like **** but i called er a night but its in there. Tomorrow night I plan on making the other piece that goes in there beside the one i made, then weld the bent pieces on the inside through the hole that i cut out just below the primer paint and body work. Then I will start working on that other bullshit just behinde the piece i just put in tonight. Its gonna be a bitch to do it, and do it right. and by the looks of things I might have to do a little chopping on the drivers side too....... FUCKKKK *** it never ends. Anyways here some more pictures of whats new.
