my new RX7
my new RX7
hi im new to the forum but already i love it. I bought a 1985 RX7 series 3 yellow 2 days ago.. it has power windows , power mirrors, but not power steering, sun roof.. and its an automatic..
can you guys give me any suggestions for an RX7 newbie such as myself..
i am aware that i have to start it with the choker and leave it running for like 3 mins until i can fully drive off..
anyone got any other suggestions when starting? or like warming it up so i dont do any serious damage to my beautiful first gen.
also any precautions i should know when handeling rotaries.. i dont realy ripp it much .. because i am afraid i will wreck the car..
Also anyone here fom sydney australia that can point me towards a good body kit provider for first gen RX7s? because im wlling to spend an extra 4k AUSD on it since i got it so cheap..

I'm not gonna give you **** about the auto, since you bought an rx7. I got an 85 as well.
As far as warming up goes, just crank it over, pull the choke out a bit until it idles at about 900 - 1000rpm. After say a minute or so, push the choke in a bit till it idles around 800rpm. Leave it there for a good 3 - 4 minutes. Then, for the next say 5minutes, don't drive it past 2500rpm.. let the engine get warm before you do anything else. Always do this when the engine is cold. If you just leave the rx7 for an hour or so and come back, providing it's still reasonably warm you can pretty much take off straight away. The main thing is take it easy for the first little bit of a drive (as with any car really)
Put in a 5spd as soon as you can. They are great fun. The choke will go in by itself after a while, but if it's still out after a good 8 mins of driving, push it in yourself all the way.
Other than that, change the oil regularly (not synthetic) and sparks plugs, filters, etc. baby it, clean it, and dont thrash it and you'll be fine.
Sydney has a huge amount of Rotary places. Check out maztech, mazdaspeed, Mildren, pac performance racing to name a small handful. Go buy the latest "fast fours & rotaries" magazine and look at all the rotary ads inside.

Haha, oh yeah...3000 miles is about 4827 kilometers.
A good place to check out body kits (where Im getting mine acutally) is www.selectmaz.com.au. Theyve got some cool stuff you may like.
Also, I just wanna say that its good to know that people are getting on her to find out the information you are scking about, rather than making mistakes and messig stuff up. i dont understand..... whats the thing with starting with auto?? i always thought its best to start on 5spd because if you can do that, you can drive anything. and i think its easier to start 5spd cuz if its your first car your driving, you dont know if its hard or not cuz you dont know any better. i dont know that just what i thought.

I dunno - learning how to drive is not only about how to drive the vehicle, but how to pay attention to the road, judge safe speeds, react to sudden obstacles, road signs, traffic lights, etc - all these things we do automatically after a few years and so forget what learning was like.
I don't think there's anything wrong with learning to drive on an automatic. Now instead of worrying about how much clutch slip to give the car when starting on a hill he can pay attention to whether a slow pedestrian is about to cross in front of him even though the light is green or some other such thing. Once he's learned the basics of driving, he can move onto the basics of driving a 5 speed.

i agree with the whole thing about starting out with a auto, its kina pointless , i thought it would be tough startin out on a standard, but it took me like an hour to full get a hang of standards
C'mon, you can't deny that starting with an auto is easier. There's simply less things to do. Less is easier. Period.
I do think it's important to learn how to drive stick eventually, however.

Wide body kits are kinda expensive, like $1500 U.S. And that's just for the kit. Then comes installation, preping and painting. Maybe $3000 or more - time you're done. And they have to be painted correctly. More than 50% of the widebody RX's I've seen over the years sucked 'cause the owner either didn't take the time or (after buying the kit) didn't have the money to correctly prep and paint the car.
Some of the other guys have widebodies and probably have much better advice.
