My first rx7!
Hi everybody!
So I'm the new proud owner of a 85' gls!
I'm in Calgary Alberta and was wondering where would be a good place to take the car for work?
I need to get safety done on it and wanted to change all fluids and all that stuff you do when you get a new old car... Its a tan color with some rust. Its been sitting (in a garage) for the past 3 years. Has 166k on it. Ever came with the manual with warr. car and the salesman's card in the glove box! All of the service stamps are in the book right up to 1997 when it was sold to 2nd owner. They only drove it for 4 years and its been parked since 2002.
So anyway I'm planning to most of the work myself. I've just never done tranny fluid and stuff like that.
Pics to come and any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks!!!

Congrats! You will love your new purchase. Like many new Rx7 owners, the bug hits you quick. Before you know it you will be planning all kinds of upgrades. In general, these cars are cake to work on.
Like "Lee Lyons" said, you will want to get some jack stands, jack, and a nice little tool set to get started. A Factory Service Manual is a must and will walk you through all of your maintenance basics. It can be found in the FAQ section.

The most common and absolute best advice given will be to research, research, read, read, read. Most anything can be found here. Another good resource is

Mazspeed doesn't quite have the up-to-date following as the club but there is alot of good info on that site.
Good luck,

Thanks guys! I should have some pics up on wednesday. The tranny is a five speed... the only way to go! Other then fluids and new gas, spark plugs and an oil change is there anything else I should do before i start her up?
I'd recommend a 50/50 mix of varsol and ATF, remove the sparkplugs, and squirt some into the motor, about a tablespoon into each of the upper sparkplug holes and spin it on the starter. Spin for 20 seconds. This stuff is wonderful on RX7s, I had four of them. It will get the carbon off the rotor tip seals so you can get compression as it will free the tip seals. Cured a hard start problem for me on my GSL-SE as I had stuck rotor tip seals, a lot of folks told me my injectors were in need of replacing. Not so, the varsol mix freed the seals and bingo, instant starts. Also, if you have to park your Rex for the winter like me, I squirt the Varsol mix into the motor, spin it and loosely replace the sparkplugs and tie a plastic baggie over the exhaust pipes to keep the moisture out. No valves, right, so keep moist air from getting into the motor. Works for me, anyway

Welcome to the Darkside.
Since you live in the snow/salt belt, check out the rust thoroughly, it can literally eat these cars alive. As soon as you have it up and running, begin addressing and repairing any rust you find, it never stops.
Before start up, make sure the gas is good. If it smells bad, varnish like, drain the tank, add a can of Seafoam and change the fuel filter. Pick up a spare one too.
For further reading, there is a link in my sig line to the online FSMs, carb manuals and a couple other books on rotarys that may be of interest to you.
