Red face my first rx-7,,and i need HELP!

ready for a read?? i've just acquired my first rx-7...she's a 1979, 12a. i'm soo hooked now!! but,,it's VERY hard to get her started! got her started yesterday so i could bring her home,,once she was runnin,,she RAN!! but, when i got her home,,let her sit overnight,,i'm back to not bein able to get her started...

here's the scoop,,,
i guess she sat for a long time w/out being started,,,the previous owner put a new carb kit on her,,yesterday we found and cleaned out severely plugged fuel lines among other stuff,,,

looks like the points, rotor and cap need replacin,,so we'll get that today,,
she tries to start but won't catch,,

she's awesome tho...some rust from livin up north,,(she's in texas w/me now),,interior looks really good,, i've always been a big ford person till i saw "baybee". this is the first time i've loved a little sprts car since my 88 thunderbird turbo coup,,,,i call her baybee because she looks so small next to my 99 f150 pickup,,,,

the goob that owned her before tried to put a crappy stereo in her w/crappy speakers,,so,,he actually cut big holes in the door panels. and when u turn on the stereo or a/c..u blow the fuse..

so..after gushing about baybee,,,now,,,any ideas bout gettin her to start?

Hi there, welcome to the forum!

I think you're on the right track with the cap and rotor. You should probably get new plugs and wires in there too (see the FAQ thread if you want to know what most people here use). A new fuel filter wouldn't be a bad idea, and if the car has been sitting for a few years maybe you should drain the gas and add fresh new one. So my advice is start from there and see what happens, and let us know how it goes.

the kerosene is the best thing to use to clean out the old gas,it will also burn off if it doesn't evaporate first,,,right guys??? just a chick guessin,,,,

and now for the update,,,yes,,i'm usin the choke,,even tho,,considerin the guy that wrote the instructions is the same guy that has mangled what he could is the same guy that wrote said instructions,,,,blah!!

anyway,,choke doesn't make much dif....put on new points, cap and rotor,,,set points,,,still won't quite catch,,,plugs seems to be fouling way faster than i think they should,,but..haven't messed w'something quite like thos befo....the upper fuel filter that we put in 2 days ago was already plugged,,but ,,i don't think it was new in the first place,,put on new filter..gettin gas,,no prob,,still no go,,,

and NO!,,kick me,,go ahead,,,still haven't drained the gas tank,,,

so what do ya think,,,,,

Listen to riofrio..Check the plugs.. From driving it after it was sitting awhile could have fouled those up. They aren't easy to find in stores.. Pull them out if the are black forget it get new ones. Also clean the carb the floats could be sticking and could have flooded the engine. Are the wet?? Are the ignitors working correctly?
