Questions from a newbie

I just recently became interested in RX-7's when a friend offered to sell me his. He wants $650 for it but there are a couple of problems with it. It is an carberated 84 with a manual tranny.

1. It will not idle right. ( he does not know much about thse cars )
2. The drive shaft is messed up. He says "the yokes that hold the u-joints are wore out".

What would it take to fix these problems, and is the car worth it??

Any and All help would be appreciated.

How good's the body? Is it rusted in the rear wheel wells? (Remove a rear wheel or remove the storage bins behind the seats and check for rust.)

If it's good, I'd offer $500 AS IS, if there is rust, less... See if he bites.

Idle problem is probably carubretor... If it starts without too much trouble, it shouldn't be serious, but I can't go offa much with waht you give...

Driveshafts have Non replacable U-joints on these cars... Goto a scrapper and pick one up... It'll be cheap.

Yeah at the u-pull-it place here they only charge $20 for a driveshaft. I had two driveshafts that were both half-bad, so i got some pros to put the two together and balance it. It was only like $70

Pele, i know these cars dont have replacable ujoints, but the driveshaft i got at the yard was different and the drivetrain place said they could rebuild it. Hmmmmm

More info on the car...

I checked out the car a bit more thouroght today. The body is in fair condition. A previous owne hit a cement block with the front right corner but there was very little damage. I was unable to find any visible rust but I still need to check more thouroghly. The headlight switch is messed up so the lights will not go down. It starts fine but right now the idle is around 1500.... way to high. What all could be causing this?? The big bonus of going ov there today is he offered it to me even lower because of the drive shaft. The current offer is $450 and no lower.

give er, for 450 thats pretty good, i wouldn't think the drive shaft would be an overly hard part to find, just to be safe call the local yards beforehand see who has one. when i first got mine the idle was about 300, it was just a matter of retensioning the gas peddle cable, had way too much slack, i'm not saying you will be able to fix yours the same way, just that the idle is pretty easy to adjust, may just be a matter of turning the idle screw out/in 1/4 of a turn

Get it or I'll come down there and get it.

You've been warned.

BTW: ... Not really. It's a bit of a drive and I can't afford to insure it.

But it is a good deal.
