my first first gen is home! pics here....
Alright.. Just got home and took some im-excited-as-hell-to-have-my-first-7-and-I-want-to-take-some-pics-now pictures.
please visit http://www.x-half.com/rx7 to see it.
It has a few things wrong with it- I mentioned some yesterday.
Driving it home tonight I found out:
Drivers key hole doesn't work and is loose in the door.
Tach doesn't work. (last owner replaced tranny so it might not be connected)
Dash has NO cracks, but the console is busted all to hell
seatbelts do not retract very well if at all
passenger window doesn't roll down
gas door button needs to be pushed about 17 times before it opens
belts squeal at high RPM
the body isn't as straight as I would like it to be.. A dent Dr. will work on most
and there is a slight "rotating" noise that I noticed out on the highway, it sounds like the rear end maybe? it speeds up when I do, and I cant hear it in neighborhood driving. kinda like wha wha wha wha wha wha.. you get the pic.
Question... The oil pressure dips to 30 at idle (which is smooth by the way) and pumps up to 60 or so under throttle. Is the 30 mark normal?
First order of business... complete teardown and re build of suspension and fix the steering looseness.
Chiltons.. here I come..Yeeeha! (who am I kidding.. Autotech motorsports, here I come)
thanks for reading my novel-like post. Any comments on the car? lemme have it...

Congrats. Most of the problems seem pretty minor and with a little help from the forum I'm sure you'll sort them out.
BTW, those oil pressure readings are perfectly normal and the rear end noise is most likely a uni joint.
And lastly, tacho's are actually electronic and on the 1st gen it runs off the trailing ignitor. A non-working tach is a tell-tale sign of a fried ignitor.

I take it you like your new rx7 Nice ride you got there.
Congrats and the sound your hearing from the rear sounds like a axle bearing going bad... same with my old rear end. If it was a u-joint you would probably here a clunking when you start moving from a dead stop and while shifting.
Once palmdale opens back up, you should come up one friday night and see what she'll do.

Damn, it did start!
Drivers key hole doesn't work and is loose in the door.
once you take your door apart I am sure you will find a solution.
Tach doesn't work. (last owner replaced tranny so it might not be connected)
Tach is connected by the trailing coil. check your ignition system.
Dash has NO cracks, but the console is busted all to hell
what console? it looks fine in the pic. or the armrest one? if it is just the armrest that is off some piano hinge works great to rehinge the armrest and the back storage bins
#seatbelts do not retract very well if at all
not a clue
#passenger window doesn't roll down
strange for a crank window. if you cant get it to work I have one you can have for the cost of shipping. (its a little loose but functional)
#gas door button needs to be pushed about 17 times before it opens
are you hearing the "clunk" of the actuator fireing? if you are the rod may be sticking. Go to radio shack and get a can of "contact cleaner" you should get the kind with lubricant. this will clean out the nasties from switches and such. wouldn't hurt to give all the switches a squirt
#belts squeal at high RPM
Getting a new car I would , espicialy of a car of this age get: new NGK spark plugs, an non synthitic oil change, new belts and coolant hoses. fresh coolant and a new radiator cap and themostat. and clean that engine
#the body isn't as straight as I would like it to be.. A dent Dr. will work on most
it's your call, I would proabably put a bra on it. but thats just me.

check your drive shaft first. there is a rule of thumb about what bearing causes what, but I cant recall what it is.
good luck and get to cleaning your new 7!
enjoy

Hey guys -
Thanks for the welcomes and advice- I'll take all I can get.
I just moved here a few months ago, so I haven't heard of Palmdale... I assume its a 1/8 strip?
At any rate, I'm down with going- the car seems to run really strong.
Once I get a chance to clean the years of dirt out of the thing, Ill post better pics on my site, If anyone cares. I'm probably going to devote a section for the progress of the car and I'm thinking about offering space for others to do the same, if anyone is interested.
Hopefully I will learn enough to contribute to the forum soon instead of just asking all the time...

subgraphic,
Palmdale is home of the original "Battle of The Imports" that was started by I believe was Frank Choi, a rotarhead himself some 10 years ago. LA County Raceway is the full 1/4 mile track.
You are right in town with 1/8 mile drag events right in the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot http://www.racelegal.com/, also home to some National Champion Autocrossers and where the upcoming Super Bowl will be held.

Looks pretty good. Some of those dents can be taken out (or at least improved) with the "Ding King". It takes a lot of patience, but you can actually do some good. I improved a dreadful crease on my 85 LF fender (good enough 'til I paint and mount the new fender sitting in the garage). Actually cleaned up the nose piece on my 83 so all it requires is a little leadwork (which I like better than bondo, etc., 'cause it feathers into the steel better and doesn't get wavy), so I may not have to use the extra nose piece I have in the garage.

#passenger window doesn't roll down
Remove the panel (10 minutes) and inspect for damage. It may be OK, just need a tweak. Else, go to pick 'n pull and get one. Or order one from Mazdatrix for $130 like I did.
May just need proper adjustment, which is a traditional balancing act. You can figure it out.
