Unhappy My car eats its oil.

It seems that my car likes to eat the oil that i put in it. In about a month it eats a quart.

It looks as though there is a small oil leak from looking at the driveway.

I have no idea where to start with this. Where should i look?

Geoff

I looked under i mines and realized the drain plug was leaking, Just park the car in a dry place and look above the leak to find the wet spot.

the rotary engine burns about 1 quart of oil per 3000 mile it is normal to lose oil. change your parking place to be sure you are leaking

depends on the year check under the oil cooler if an 84-85. if not then check the oil cooler lines and the cooler for oil. Those are the usual culprits.

The rotory engine uses O-rings through out the engine.
the most commom leaks are at the oil filter pedestel / oil
cooler, and the oil pan rails, and the banjo bolt. over time the o-rings get hard and brittle, can't be helped,,
when an internal o-ring fails, you will get a puddle of
oil right above the front rotor where it says 12a .oil coolers can crack too,( air to air coolers ) where the hoses connect, and where the mounting brackets are
too.. Me, i run 20/50 valvoline oil. you might try degreasing the engine and that way you can see a bit
better to locate a leak..good luck

My car burns oil too, but not quite that fast. I use totally non-synthetic original Pennzoil 10W-40.

Its no better then any other engine oil. I think CastroGTX is what is recommended my Mazda. But any regular engine oil is fine. 10W-30 in temps up to 50F normally, 20W-50 in temps above 50F normally.

Now oil filters, there is some clear evidence that some are better then others.

Not sure where everyone's knowledge level about the rotary is, so I'll just throw this out there. Please bear in mind, I am not trying to insult anyone's itelligence with this, just throwing it out there for comparison purposes. Italics indicate an added comment by myself.

Normal oil usage, as defined by my handy 79 owners manual is 1 quart per every 1000 miles. However, depending on driving conditions and throttle position usage of up to 1 quart every 500 miles can be considered normal.

This has been a public service announcement...

Yes high oil consumption is what the rotary is suppose to do, if you are using that kinda oil everything is ok.

Now the oil leak, clean the motor up and start looking for the leak... Probally more than likely its coming from below the oil filter pdestial or cooler (as the year and case maybe).. If its leaking where it says Mazda, you need it rebuilt..

I run Redline synthetic oil in my car. 85 gs. My car runs so much smoother now. and has completly stoped burning oil. used to be about a quart every 1500 miles. pretty usual. Pretty spendy at $8 a quart, but according to the website. they recomend you change the oild every 10 to 15,000 miles or once a year. I personally wont go that far but I do go about 6000 and change my filter every 3000.
Check out the web site.
Personally I think Redline is the best.

Isn't it bad that the car has stopped burning Oil? Wouldn't the mean the seals aren't getting lubed?

If your car "has completely stopped burning oil" it means your metering pump's either disconnected or not functioning. If you're not running pre-mix in the fuel tank your apex seals will wear out prematurely.

yea, thats my understanding, you NEED to burn oil because the seals need to be lubed up. not using oil is a bad thing with rotarys.

i use about 1 quart every 1000 miles and i use 15w-50 mobile 1 synthetic. i dont know what that guy with the red line is talking about, if hes not going to change his oil for 6000 miles hes nuts, just look in new car manuals, they recemend to change the oil every 6-7000 miles, and there is no way taht oil should be ran that long, and he is crazy if he thinks that oil is going to last that long in a rotary! in my mind at least
