I have a battery heater and block heater in my '85 12A GSL, but I've never even heard of a radiator heater. I just place a section of plastic "Krazy Carpet" in front of the rad and oil cooler (I've converted my '85 to the under-rad air-to-oil style cooler from the original "bee hive" coolant-to-oil heat exchanger type), and this allows the engine to warm up faster and actually reach operating temps on the coldest days we see here. Of course, temps here rarely dip below -35 or -40. No idea how effective it would be at -60F.

That is EXCELLENT news! I'm assuming you had no use of this car since three weeks ago during our cold spell. That's a long time between rotary driving fixes. So all you did was replace the plugs, or did you also try the un-flooding procedure? It sounds like your old plugs were too wet to produce a spark. BTW, which plugs did you buy, and did the big-*** cloud of smoke go away once the engine warmed up?

If you don't have an AMA membership it would be a good idea to get one. Their premium package that allows for up to a 150km tow is $90 per year. Not bad considering you're allowed two of them, and that a simple hook-up fee for other towing companies is $35 and then you get charged by the kilometer. This would come in handy if you flood the engine again.

HAHA yeah i was thinking of the AMA memberships, it would be a huge help if i get stranded again! The cloud went away as soon as the engine warmed up, so that was good, yet incredibly funny cuz all the neighbours came out to see what was going on! yea the plugs were drenched and it was a wild goose chase trying to find new ones!

Yeah, I shoulda warned you about the big-*** cloud of black smoke that happens once you succeed in starting a previously-flooded car. So where did you get your plugs, and are they the 4-electrode type?

Talking just some advice nobodies thrown out yet

make yourself a first aid kit for your car, include these parts and tools

4 new plugs
1 fuel filter
1 spare alternator belt
1 complete set of fusible links (better to convert them to normal fuses there are 3~4 of them)(a 3~4 way stereo AGU fuse block works great, and the AGU "can fuses" are easy to find in any amperage up to 100 amps)

thin walled spark blug wrench, 21 mm
10, 12, 14, 17, 19 hand wrenchs, and sockets
sloted and + screwdrivers

this will cover 95% of the problems you will have, minus major malfunctions. quick description:

Plugs: you already figured out
belts: the early v belt style rotaries are belt eaters, especially if you have removed your emissions stuff
fusible links, are so irratateing that yu won't want to find out unless yu have spares.

if there anything I missed guys, fill her in on it

Kenn

i hope you made sure too get the ngk spark plugs and not champion or autolite. as a matter of maintenance you should change the spark plugs once a year no matter what then you won't have a problem. i only use ngk br8eq-14 spark plugs for my 1985 rx-7.

Did you get those from Mazda or from RX7 Specialties? Just wondering, because Adam at RX7 Specialties sells these and other components for less than what Mazda charges.

Good to know they're available from several different suppliers in the states. Up here north of the 49th parallel very few places outside of Mazda carry them.
