Cant beliove i missed this, sorry!Yip,moslty with old plates! They tend to port harder, allot harder. The nice thing:You dont have to be so super-scared while porting. It takes more time.
*Blush* that be me Sir!Yip,i`am sure it would have run fine if idling at 2000 and revving to 12000 or something rediculous!haha.
Dont worry, yours seems to be ok.I`ll try to get some shots of the old overported housings for you

karis, do you only deal with early plates? Aren't they harder to port since the iron is harder all the way through?
karis, didn't you once have an engine that was ported so large that it couldn't be started with a starter? Didn't it have to be roll started? I have to admit these large ports of mine are starting to make me think about stuff like that.
I'll get a couple pics of the sandwich today.

Better late than never.
Those plates aren't technically early plates. They're the softer nitrided kind from the early '80s. I wouldn't want to port any that large again, unless I had a real die grinder. The dremel takes too long.
This engine found its way into PercentSevenC's GLC Sport. It got a quickie rebuild to address a couple issues and I temporarily installed it in my REPU. It fired right up the first time and ran very well. It could idle all the way down to 600 RPM within two minutes of run time! After it had its 45 minutes of driveway break in, I took it out and worked hard on the GLC to get it ready. It fired up quick and ran fine in the GLC and has been a trouble-free engine since then. Not bad for such large streetports.

Well, seeing as this thread has been revived, perhaps it would be appropriate for the new owner of this engine to chime in.
It fires up quickly and runs beautifully. I suppose the power at low RPM is somewhat lacking, but you don't really notice it until you feel how unbelievably awesome the top-end is. One of these days I'll get some good vids of the car in action, but until then I've got some (admittedly poor-quality) audio clips I can post.
Outside the car:

Inside the car, going up a hill by my house (and yes, I need new motor mounts ):

That reving audio clip sounds really healthy, and loud.
The driving audio clip actually sounds quite accurate to how the interior of the car actually sounds while being driven. Even the little details like the click in the clutch pedal is there.
When were these recorded? It sounds like the choppy '77-ish carb. It sure fires up quick! Does the Cosmo carb fire up as quickly?

When I took the first clip I actually had the microphone pointed away from the car by mistake. I tried it again with the mic pointed the right way but the sound overloaded it and it sounded like garbage.
I was kind of impressed how well the second one turned out. That is about how the car sounds on the inside.
They were taken shortly after the new fuel pump was installed (you can hear it in the background), but before we traded carbs. So yes, it's the '77 carb. The Cosmo carb does fire up just as quickly when it's warm, but when it's cold it won't idle right away. Just kind of annoying, especially since the choke cable keeps popping out of the bracket. Meh, I'll take smooth driveability over easy starts any day.
