mufflers OTHER than RB.
surely they cant be the ONLY think i can stick on the back of my car to make it quieter....but from what i hear around here, youd think they were.
this thread isnt about how good RB exausts are, its about the possibilities of using other ones... any experiences or insights?

you can put any muffler you want on it just weld it on and it will work. but i would say its all a matter of preferance. some people like the twin tip some like a single huge 4" tip (like mine).
as for sound each one will sound different. mine is a trust. its loud and verry deep.
i feel most people buy a muffler 80% for looks 20% for performace. i personaly could care less what it looked like as long as it gets the job done. but thats up to the user.
so in short any muffler will work, just pick one that is in your budget, and that you like for any reason.

How long do you want it to last?
I think that is the real question. You can put anything on there, and in x amount of time it will go bad.
Mazdas are brutal on mufflers. If you want the muffler longer, then you need something that can take the heat. There are guys that run will lava/pumice stone in their muffler, becuase nothing else can take the heat.
So, one way to look at this is if the muffler is packed with glass wool it will last a week or two. If it is packed with stainless steel wool, it will last a LOT longer. If it is packed with pumice it will last a WHOLE YEAR on the track! Ok, so if you are not running on the track it will last longer.
One reason poeple buy RB mufflers are they are built for the abuse. In the end, a RB muffler is cheaper than two or three other mufflers.
Good luck

so i can basically use any SS muffler? I dont push my car all the hard most of the time due to fuel costs and high mileage.
RB mufflers and the like promise increases in mileage and power. will pretty much any aftermarket muffler do this? or is the rb muffler speccialy tuned? my current muffler has a hole in it... a universal muffler wont hurt my mileage, will it?
thanks!

A universal muffler will be more restrictive than a tuned muffler.
A universal muffler will dissolve after a year or so from the hotter exhaust a rotary generates
A universal muffler looks like you're willing to ***** your car out to the cheapest aftermarket parts you can find
Buy a new cheap muffler annually, or invest in a high quality muffler from the folks that Mazda turned to for the tuned exhaust on the Protégé5 - Racing Beat.
If Mazda buys performance parts off them, there's a good chance their parts are every bit as rugged and effective as owners like Myself have experienced first hand.

I use a Brullen Muffler. Solid Construction and have been used on many a rotary.
Plus they are "Canadian Made!"

i have a rb headers, rb presilencers, and a rb primaflow on my gslse. b4 the primaflow, with the same headers and pre silencers, i had an apexi n1 muffler, then a magnaflow. the n1 was loud from the beggining. way too loud. u can literally hear it from 2 blocks away and my friend was able to feel the ground shake when i was revin the egine. it sounded like a rotary dragster. about a weak later, it blew out all the matterial in the muffler and it didnt muffle at all. it sounded juss as loud as when i had no muffler. then, my next choice was a ultraflow but the local muffler shop didnt have any ultraflows. guy at the muffler shop told me to go with the magnaflow because theyr higher quality. i specifically told him that rotarys run wit a higher exaust temp and he said the magna flow will still handle it. well... he was wrong. in the beggining, it was pretty quiet and sounded pretty sporty. after a month it was loud as hell. my friend has a 1st gen but it wasnt registerd and he was drivin around his tII so i borrowed the premaflow off his 1st gen. its been exactly 1 year since i "borrowed" his premaflow and it still sounds very quite. it sounds almost close to stock but with a addition of performance.
2 of my friends r using ultraflow presilencers and a ultraflow exhaust. its alot cheaper than the rb parts and it makes the car just as quiet. they both had that setup for about 2 years and its still very quiet. performance wise, we couldnt tell the difference wit my rb setup.

what about install costs? the muffler on an 85 gsl has a long intake tube thats bent to fit over the axle... how much would you expect a muffler shop to charge to weld something like that up for this one? http://www.meganracing.com/shop/cata...products_id=96
i dont care if it only lasts a year.. i dont know if i'm going to have this car in one year. it just needs to be cheap, decently quiet, and not hurt stock performace/economy levels.

thorin, yes, thats the one. i dont know about the fiberglass part but all i know is that it works. they both got it from summit racing for around 50 bux. i saw a add for a bridge ported 1st gen 4 sale a while back. the car was used for the street and it had full interior. the guy was running 2 ultraflow presilencers and 2 ultraflow mufflers. he said he never had any problems wit his mufflers and that his car is pretty quiet.
about the install cost... it was around $60. first i baught the flange that fits on the back part of the rb presilencers. then he welded 2 pipes on to the flange, collected them b4 the muffler, and at it was bent so that it goes over the axel. then, the n1 was welded on. the piping looked exactly like the piping on the rb premaflow. i was there the whole time and it was alot of work and he did a really clean job. later on, when i was not satisfied wit the n1 i juss asked the guy at the muffler shop to chop off the n1 and weld on the magnaflow. when i was dissatisfied wit the magnaflow, i slapped on my friends premaflow. so total... less see... $60 piping, $5? flange, $185 apexi n1, $75 chop off n1 weld on magna(muffler price included), sell the n1 on the net for $100. total spent was $225 and i ended up wit a rb premaflow that i got 4 free from my friend...
oh by the way, magnaflow is life time warrenty so if i send them my muffler, i think theyll send me a new one. didnt send them my muffler yet... too lazy....
