I need to replace the muffler on my 85 RX-7. What would be a good choice that would offer good performance at an affordable price? The car is being prepped for SCCA CS autocross use.

I went with the powerpulse muffler from racing beat. I'm sure there are other options I went with them for their good standing around here and they are easy to deal with.

I like how the Borla ProXS muffler sounds, and it flows pretty darn well for not much money.

Ya, the borla pro xs is great from what i've heard. I would go with borla. You will have to have it welded on though. It will cos t less than the RB one and flow better though.

Weld

I can weld it myself. Stock pipe on a 12a is 2.25" correct?

For $256 the RB muffler had better be good.

I just got my header, muffler and presilencer in today. I'm impressed byt the construction of the muffler, lots of attention to stress points with additional bracing, Heavy though, I should have it on this weekend with the presilencer and the new header to give you some more opinions.

That muffler will work, probably won't be as quiet or last as long as the RB one. If you plug in the part # and search eBay, you can find it cheaper.

Flow

Basically I want good flow, cheap, long lasting in that order. Heck, if I could make it work I would run a glass pack.

I just eBayed the part # for the Magnaflow you picked out. Summit has the best price on that model atm. Cheapest eBay one I found was 142.95 shipped.

I'm running 2 Magnaflows on the widebody, but I'm running a full 3" system and the one I'm using as a pre-silencer is a round one, should have gone oval instead. Is it loud, oh yeah, but it's also a 1/2 bridge.

If you're happy with the price, go with the one you picked out.

I have still yet to be disatisfied with all of the Racing beat products that thay have, and I have been useing them for years...

I will tell you one thing though I have spent more money building my own exhaust syatem in my cars over the years and every one that I have built did not last long and sounded like crap to me after a short time after..

I am now on year 2 with a full custom exhaust useing all RB parts and I have been happy with it ever sence... That system is in my 1988 Rotary powered mazda B2200..

Another muffler thread... oye.

Why is it everyone looks to the muffler as this huge performance monster upgrade for an rx-7? Truthfully it isn't going to do all that damn much. Get rid of the cat.'s and get a header. Buy a muffler that suits your noise tastes and call it a damn day!

I'd love to get someone with a full racing beat exhaust on a stock 12a to race me. With my cheezy stock catless exhaust. The 3 flywheel hp difference between the two won't make a **** of difference. And I think my stocker with a good tune on it would probably beat out 90% of the RB exhaust having rotorheads out there.

Expensive custom exhaust kits IMO are the biggest waste of money out there. You want something nice go to a performance exhaust shop and have it custom made. I've always done it, its cheaper and flows better....

Muffler... pffft! Who cares... buy a used n20 kit and spray a little 20-50 shot. Thats good HP for the money! Not an $800-$1300 custom exhaust kit.

Alright I'm done now...

Let the flames roll in.... I'm ready!

I didn't go with racing beat for the performance, I went because they were recommended, the few I have heard in the area sounded good with a deep muffled tone without that metallic whine at high rpm that a cheap exhaust has. I could go custom, but the shops that do that stuff around here charge more than the RB exhaust system for their time. The RB system had the nice presilencer bolt up combo. I like my cars subtle, not loud. If I can hear it in the house while it's running, it's too loud for my tastes. Just having the header and the presilencer to open up the exhaust system may not give me a lot of extra performance, but it gives me some leeway when I start playing with the carb jets and experiment with upgrading the airflow on the stock nikki carb.

I'm not coming down on racing beats products. They are nice. But the price is just to out there. If I were to come across a compete header back system for the price I could have one made ($320) I would buy them hands down.

You must have some super expensive world renowned exhaust shops around there. A cat back system here for my rx-7 was $180. (cats just happened to be removed at this time) And that was 2.5 inch non mandrel bent. No huge sharp turns were taken so I can live with that. I used a black dragon OEM replica muffler just because it was just purchased new and still on the car when I bought it. I am like you though and with out the cats the factory muffler is to loud for my tastes.

Anyway 2 friends with na's one FB and one Fc use this magna flow/dynomax setup. I think it's great sounding. No droning and very nice deep tone. No loud tinny note that the rotarys are known for.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-...temZ8040053314

They are $140 shipped

So for $320 a 2.5 inch exhaust with pre-silencer and muffler can be had.

Will the magna flows hold up to the rotary heat like the racing beats? I'm really not sure. But I haven't heard any complaints yet.

I startted the thread. I am looking for a muffler because my stock muffler is beginning to rot. I am not doing it for a performance gain. That being said, I don't want to lose performance. I like to hear my cars. I love the spund of a good engine. As for horsepower gains, 2 or three wheel horsepower may nit be much, but heck, if I have to replace the part anway, I'll take it.

Not all of use drag race or race in a class where we can swap carbs or bridgeport an engine or buy a NO2 system. In stick class autocross, it all mjst be done with very few mods. I can't even mod the aircleaner or springs.

You can't touch the air cleaner but you can change the exhaust?

Either way I just thought I'd throw up an opinion.

If you don't mind and happen to have a sawz-all or hack saw would U mind cutting open the OEM muffler and throwing up some pics? I always wanted to see inside of one. I'm thinking of changing mine as well.

Thanks
And good luck with your selection!

The I can only modify the exhaust from the cat to the rear bumper. No headers and I must run a cat.
