MSD Question
Does anyone have dyno results to show the difference when you leave the stock setup and go with the MSD 6A and dual coils setup?
Is this a noticeable difference?
Who has the best price on this setup?

I dunno about power wise but the engine does run much smoother, start a lot easier, especially when cold, and MPG goes up a couple points.
Spark plug life gets even worse, though.
I think it's worth it just for the driveability gains... I paid $250 for everything, and made my own brackets out of some scrap sheet metal (case of a 386 I found in someone's trash pile one week). $180 for the 6AL, $30 each for the coils, and tax. Later I bought a set of pills (8000-8800 evens) for $25 w/tax.

I'd have to agree with peejay though I've experienced good spark plug life*. I wouldn't say there was any HP gains from just going direct fire BUT, when I changed to *side fire plugs in conjunction with the direct fire/MSD setup, I actually felt a difference. With the side fire plugs, my car pulls harder and right now I have around 15,000 miles on them without any problems. The cool thing is that the plugs are cheaper too. There's a write up somewhere about the plugs. I think it's at paul yaw's site but you have to type in "/ignition.html" after the home page address to get it. Luckily, I found my MSD box used and got it with a bunch of other stuff (fuel pump, regulator, gauge) for $150.

Since that site hasn't actually been updated in about 3 million years, what plugs are you using and how big of a gap are you leaving? 15000 miles would show up shortcomings in the idea, so I'd have to say you're current set up is the way to go. Please share....

Local speed shop.
I was living 40mi from Summit Racing at the time, and the LSS actually had better prices, and trust me the service at Summit SUCKS.
'Course now I live only a handful of miles away from Jeg's... Ohio is a cool place to live if you're into cars.

And now we need to hear from puaka to see if he's running something similar in his rex which I think is a 12A engine. How many miles have you had a single set of plugs last, WR?

Ok, I'm back. I used some NGK's that are from the V-power product line. I believe they're motorcycle plugs. The part number is R5400-heat range number (8, 9, or 10). If I remember, I gapped the leading plugs at .085 and the trailing at .055. I am in atlanta and chose the 9's all the way around. I haven't checked them since installation but haven't noticed any real signs of wear. Plus, they're only about $2 each. just remember, if you buy some, YOU HAVE TO CONVERT THEM TO SIDE FIRE!!!! or you will lunch an apex seal and noone wants that. BTW, I do have a stock 12a in my '82 (for now at least). I totally recommend these plugs (if you have direct fire. the gap is too great otherwise). it's probably the most power you'll ever get for less than $10. Now don't go thinking you're gonna get 20 HP out of this but it's was surprising for just swapping plugs. the write up on paul yaw's site is at .http://personal.riverusers.com/~yawpower/ignition.html
Hope this helps
