Actually, the RX-8 is a RE-MSP
Rotary Engine Multiple Side Port. Initial estimates give it about 20 mpg city/ 28 mpg highway.
As for the peri-port, if you can afford to do up your motor like that, gas shouldn't be an issue. If you have to ask, you don't have enough cash.

Awesome... man, there's too much to learn about these cars....
I knew there wasn't a high enough demand for them in North America, so they stopped selling them here, but I didn't know they kept producing them elsewhere...

Got Boost?
Sure you can drive a pp on the street, but that is different then being streetable...... Like Karism said, your going to be looking at aroun 10 mpg, ouch !!! Combine that with the exhaust sound level and you'll see why its not practical for the street.

I can has a Hemi? Yes...

For a PP to make power, it has to be full open exhaust, (preferably megaphone)
It has to be REALLY Loud (deafening really)
If you put mufflers on it, then you might as well have gone Street-port
It has to have a Custom aftermarket Intake ($$$$)
It has to have a Big Aftermarket carb. ($$$$)
It has to have custom housings made ($$$$)
It should have carbon seals, so you don't destroy the housings ($$$$)
It should have clearanced rotors and side plates, and
It has to idle at about 2000 RPM or more.
Obviously, this thing would not be streetable.
It's not the horrible milage,
It's not the exhaust fumes making you dizzy
It's not the total lack of power under 4000 RPM
It's the freaking Noise.
The noise is unbearable for short periods of time,
and under acelleration, it is horrible (but beautiful at a track).
Go Listen to a PP at wide open throttle first, get real world calculations on the cost of obtaining it, and then
consider it.
I consider a big bridge-port impractical for the street as it is, but you can get away with it.
A PP? Forget about it.

I agree completely, DF. Check out the vids on Mazdatrix from sevenstock. IIRC they have clip of PP car, and its extremely loud.
PP's actually are very volumetrically efficent almost to idle. So you're correct on that one for sure. They make more power that low than stock or streetports, given that they have a fully open exhaust. They just disproportionally make tons more up high, so it gives the impression of now low end. Who has the graph that shows the difference in VE, I've seen it on here before?
