Moving the fuel pump?

I replaced my fuel pump a while ago, but I cant find the plate to cover it back up with. Its a carter pump. Anyway, I was thinking of moving it to under the hood (its unprotected under the car now ). Is this a bad idea for any reason?

Fuel pumps like to push, they don't like to pull. So if the pump has to draw up the fuel (working against gravity) it might not work so well. Gravity needs to feed the pump, so it should be mounted under the fuel tank (anywhere along a plane under the fuel tank, not necessarily directly under it).

I kinda figured that. Do the steel fuel lines under the car go up higher than the gas tank? If not, then would it really be that bad to have the pump under the hood, as long as it is lower than the tank?

lol, i was going to say the same as kettlman. a guy i know has a bridgeport 12a and ran his holley pump in the driver side bin behind the seat. always makes people think something is wrong with the car. :P: but it works perfectly!

Theres just one thing about it being inside the car, its a fire hazard. I remember reading about this a while ago and ppl saying that a guy had a fire and it got real bad. Ive also heard that its illegal, and for good purpose.

well I think that the pump isnt safe where it is right now, either. I dont have the plate to cover it, and Im worried that a rock or something might hit it.

Yeah I dont really like the idea of fuel lines running inside the car. Who knows when murphy's law will strike.

ditto... your car won't pass vehicle inspection with your fuel pump inside your storage bin, and I personally wouldn't do it... something about highly flammable gas, electrical components, and an enclosed area behind my seat that just doesn't seem safe to me...

Make up a new bracket and put it somewhere else...

where would you put it?

I dont have to worry about vehicle inspections or any of that crap, but I also dont want to start on fire!

try to find something to replace that piece, is it just hanging there or did you mount it to the chasis? All you really need is something to cover it like you said, its not that big a problem, just drill the holes and there you go. might have to do some bending.

I'm trying to figure out where to mount my Holley Blue. Anyone running that pump have pics they would like to share?

Mount it along the rear frame rail, near where the original pump was located. There is enough space to stand it vertically back there. I run a Mallory pump, which is about the same size, and it fits.

Lotus,
Your carter pump is designed to be mounted vertically. Two good locations are to mount it on either the frame rail, or up in a pocket right next to the gas tank directly above the rear axle. Carter says it's perfectly alright to mount their pump up to 7 inches higher than the tank, plus I've used mine in this position for more than 2 years now without a single issue and it's more protected than virtually any other place on the car.

pm me your email if you want a couple of pics.
