Motor Swaps

Hey Guys and Girls! I'm a import fanatic! My uncle is moving to New york with his 85 RX-7. What i need is your help telling me which motor is best to swap it with. The motor in there now is blown and need to be replaced. Im am lookin for a 6 with turbo or twin turbo hopefully that fits. He doesnt really want another rotary drive. Would a Nissan VG30DE-TT 300Zx, 95-97 Toyota 2JZGTTE Supra, or a Mazda KLZE motor fit? I kno there is away to fit V8's in there but im not sure i neither he wants to pay the gas in a V8. Price is not really an issue and all help would be seen as extremely generous. I personally drive my honda prelude but i need ur help. thanks

With the money you woulkd have to spend doing one of those swaps, you could build a 13bT with MAD ammounts of power (~400hp) and still be a good dailly driver. Don't ever doubt the rotary my friend.

Im personally not highly against other piston engine swaps, but unfortunatly you came to the wrong place to ask about them...

not to be a dick.. but

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/forumd...30&forumid=118

i usually keep my bastardized project info there, and there only.

basically because i love the first gen section, and i dont want everyone flaming the hell out of me.

as far as 2jz's and 300z motors, you might as well take a fc or fd if your on "unlimited" money. and the first response goes, you could build a nice 13bt for the price it would take to buy those motors. plus, people usually swap because they want power on a budget. also, if you think swapping another motor into a car is going to solve "reliability problems", think again, from what i see, people have alot of problems with more swaps till everything is perfectly straightened out.

but for whatever you do, good luck.

It'll be hard to fit any I6 they're too long, so forget the 2JZ. Not that it can't be done, just not on a budget short of 20G's. The KLZE is desined for transverse mounting -- It might fit, but whats the point, they don't make much power, and aren't easy to turbo AFAIK. The VG30DE-TT sounds the easiest of those options, but for the price, I agree with the above statement -- stay rotary, and spend the money building it up instead. Seriously, you could probably do the "ultimate" rotary swap, the 20B, for less cheese than any of those motors and have power potential to spare.

If you're absolutely bent on bastardizing/pistonizing the 7, go with a built V8. Its waters have been traversed, and can be done for a lot less than another import engine.

Yeah... like everyone here said. You can get J-spec 13BT's for 1050 at corksport. That is an awesome price. Or go 20B. Either way, by avoiding teh mainstream "Twin Turbo Supra Motor" you avoid a hell of a lot of money.
Like everyone here said... people who say "stay away from rotaries" rely too much on heresay and past mistakes. Stay rotary... save bucks... go big.

depending on what motor you go with, you are probably going to want to find a TII transmission to handle the additional torque.

DO NOT put a piston engine in your RX7. It will NEVER handle like an Rx7 again. If you want more power this is my suggestion: 1. Swap a built 13b with a Weber for around 2k= 200-220hp 2. Swap a TII engine, depending on the kind of power you want will definatly affect the price!!. However a good base TII swap will cost around 3k.

I wouldnt waist time rebuilding a 12a FB tranny. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to find. If you are swapping for a more powerful engine, a TII tranny is the way to go, www.mazdaracing.com sells Jspec trannys for 350 I think.

Another factor is your means, resources, and knowledge of doing such a project. Turbo rotaries are perticular to detonation and a properly tuned setup is a must if reliability is something you want to keep. There are MANY things you need to know about this swap. Often people don't understand the scope of such a project. So......Hang out, learn, gather parts, and watch your creation take form.
There are many people here willing to help......and don't forget the search key,..very helpful in itself.

Good luck

Have you ever driven a V8 converted 7? I'll tell you this with just the avarage suspension upgrade (see sig) you'll still handle great. The GSL-SE I used to have handled allot worse than my V8 7. Don't get me wrong the car for sure handles different, but not worse. You just can't get in and drive it like any other 7, no, because you have all that extra power on hand.
