Motor Blown?

I just fiddled with the intake and carb on my 12a and now I think I broke the motor.

It sounds like it has good compression if I turn it over with no plugs, but when it does run it spews smoke.

The coolant bubbles like crazy if I just crank it over, not even starting it.

Could I have screwed up putting the intake on? If I didn’t put the o rings and gasket on correctly would this happen?

Or did I just loose a water jacket seal thingy and need a new motor.

HELP!

Thanks,
Scott

It sounds like the coolant o-rings on the manifold are not sealing.. You are probably injecting water

They are on the intake maifold between the intake runners..

That's what I was hoping, I have tried to seal the thing up correctly at least three times and am getting nowhere fast.

It looks like I will order a new manifold gasket and new o-rings and try again.

Thanks a ton for the advice.

Scott

PS. Anyone know of a better intake manifold / water o ring sealer upper method?

Well, if you are not worried about cold start up. just seal the coolant passages on the block..

BTW a quarter fits the whole perfectly..

I used jb weld & a quarter on each.. Now i never have to worry about it again...

This will affect cold starting.. and in winter if you drive you might have problems with your carb icing up..

Thats a damn fine idea. If I was still using that manifold, I'd be out there doing that right now.

It is not on the manifold side, it is on the rotor housings...

I live in Texas where it never ( well, hardly ever ) gets below zero (unless you count wind chill, brrr).

Do I still have to worry about carb icing or is that just in the colder climates?

Water on the plugs...

My 86GXL 13b doesn't start and I pulled the plugs and their all wet. So I figured I either have

a) cracked block
b) blown gaskets between the housings?

but I didn't know there was a water seal/o-ring on the intake manifold. How do I figure out which one of these is the cause? I was planning to just put that stop leak stuff in the radiator but if it's just a couple of O-Rings then I prefer to just fix those.

sorry dude! it turned out it was my water jacket seal gone bad. I even went as far as plugging up the water passages on the block and the radiator still spewed gaseous fumes and sputterd water all over the place. if you remove the intake and the manifold gasket is definetly wet try new o rings and gasket. if not does your radiator spew coolant hen you crank the motor over with the cap off? if so remove the manifold and block off the coolant passages(temporarily) and crank it around. if you still spew rad fluid the water jacket is shot.

good luck

I know what your problem is... unfortunately it's not cheap or pretty.

How does that happen?

I can see from the picture that metal is thin in that area of the side housing but I still can't imagine how that is cracking outwards. It's as if there was alot of pressure on the housing at that point, probably from combustion? That crack is on the spark plug side of the housing right?

Maybe it's just a quality flaw with the original casting? I don't think all 13B's crack like this. I wonder what the ration is like 1 in 10 motors crack here?

If mine is cracked in this spot, I hope that that at least, "Block Seal" can fix this.
