moral problem sell fb or not

the problem is i have an 85 gs and i think i might have to get rid of her for another car. she is reliable but needs to have the engine rebuilt really soon. or so I've been told it needs. i plan on keeping it no mater how much i need to put in it. but some people in my life want me to get something different. its going to be a volkswagon or a mazda 3 hatchback or a 6 hatchback. and i cant keep the 7 if i do get another car

On what are these other people basing the need for a rebuild? That is the 1st question to answer.

the car has over 134,000 miles on it and I've been told it has a front housing seal not sure on that one. I think I'm going to keep it.

If you sell it, I guarantee you WILL regret it. Thats the reason I have kept up on mine for so long. If I sold it I would hate myself for the rest of my life (no word of a lie). I've had my 82 for nearly 4 years and have only driven it 2 months before the original 12A went out. Even before I drove the car the first time I was in love with the car. It is part of me, and I could never sell it.

It doesn't really sound like you want to sell it. Don't sell because others do, sell because it's what YOU want to do. I am considering selling my SE, but that's mostly because I've upgraded my Miata so much that I drive it most of the time these days.

One thing worth noting, and the biggest reason why I'll probably hang on to mine- first gens don't sell for a lot of money. Even if you buy yourself a new car, it's probably not worth holding on to the old 7 considering the small amount of cash you might get for it.

i dunno dude, im coming up on 160xxx miles, i had it since 148xxx miles, and i have relatively good compression when i was cranking it without my exhaust mani on. motor still runs strong even tho i over heated teh engine once severely and once "minorly" (even tho thats bad enough) and i still drive the hell out of the thing. having to need a rebuild at 130xxx miles is kinda early to me. only motors that i think would need that would be the boosted ones. i like to say that the 12a is super freakin reliable with maintenance but this is just my experience.

mileage isn't everything on an engine. how well you or the previous owner(s) maintainted it plays a more critical role in the longevity of it. since i've bee driving, i've NEVER been without an RX-7. never will. i personally say keep it. you'll regret it if you sell it and every time you see another 7 you'll think back to the one you sold and want the car back.

+1...especially with rotarys.

12a rebuilds are fairly inexpensive and they last a very long time. Keep it around, even if you get another car.

If the FB is paid for and you have the title, why can't you keep it and get the other car? No trade-in deals vs. trade-in deals at a dealership will affect monthly payments but not by much if you try to use the FB as a trade-in...they won't give you what you think it's worth. Starting a family or what?

On my '84 GSL i just rolled over to 173,000,granted I'm kind of surprised considering the circumstances on how I got the car, but the 12a's can last a long time with proper care. I briefly considered selling my '79 with 78,000 miles on it (the driver's side front wheel needs a new suspension, ******* ice) but it was the first car I bought and I can't get rid of her, because I know I would hate myself if I did. Don't sell your 7 take it off insurance , don't register it and rebuild the engine in the mean time all it will do is take up space that is it.

If owning the car makes YOU happy, then you have to make the decision to keep it. Other people can't make the decision for you and other people shouldn't tell you what makes you happy. Bought my Mazda R100 25 years ago when I was just a kid. I always loved the car (even when it looked like a piece of junk) and nobody ever had a good enough excuse to talk me out out of keeping it. I faced alot of snickering and cheap shots from a whole host of people who worked on the car or by friends or even by family members. All it ever did was to thicken my skin and reinforce my desire to hold on to it. I have always enjoyed owning it and had to make some sacrafices along the way to keep it, but there are no regrets.

I let a car go once, that regret is what's kept my 7 by my side for the last 12 years. Besides, other than space, what will you really get out of getting rid of the car?

The moral problem is simply this...to keep the car against sage advice and practicality is the very expression of human lust, one of the seven deadly sins and a slippery moral path to the gates of Hell...in case you were wondering...

how much would you have to spend on a new car?

A 12A rebuilt motor installed can be more than the price of another used car??? When this motor actually goes then worry, for now change the old regularly, run 20w50 with a little lucas oil treatment and start saving for that rainy day!

I bought the cars about 7 months back. still owe a little on it maybe a few hundred dollars. but they want me to get something a little bit more economical. not so old i guess. before that i have an old vw beetle that i still regret getting rid of and i dont want that to happen again. hopefully i can get my family to understand.

Ahhh, the generation growing up today...hopefully, I'll be dead and gone before this particular hand is played out...GWB is just the tip of the iceburg...

And economical? Go do a search for peejay's thread (or was it pele?) on how to get 30 mpg from a carb'd 12A rotary engine...I believe that smokes the current Accord offerings...
