Question modified rear axle? do i need one?

the damn thing keeps breaking. in the differential, the mount that holds the ring gear keeps busting. its getting hard to find used differentials. its also getting expensive. do i need a modified rear? or perhaps just a brand new one? or maybe i need a ford 9" rear, i dont know. all i know is that it has broken several times, and im getting tired of it. another thing, my second and third gear do not work anymore, could it be a bent shifter fork? they did it over time, they just got worse and worse until one day they would not engage at all. anyone else have these problems with their cars?

and back to the rear axle question, how much money am i looking at?

How much HP do you think your pushing,is where you need to start off first,

Second on yoru tranny problems,

Does it go into 4th?

It can be bad clutch, bad syncros,Did it grind before when it was driving and you put it in second and third gear?

Only way is to take it out and look into it,If it has bad syncros get them all changed or just swap another tranny,First gen trannys are easy to find.

if your running a standard engine than no you don't need a modified axle

what exactly are you doing to eat diffs like that ?

it could be a problem with the axle casing or half shafts thats causing the diffs to break

isnt rice racing pushing like 600hp and he uses a s2 axle I beleive.

s3 axles are slightly stronger but they weight 50 lbs more.

50 lbs more? are you sure about that?
otakuRX: it all depends on what you plan to do with it. Hell, if you easy on teh throttle the stock axle could handle a ton of hp, but if you clutch drop it everywhere its gonna die. I remember hearing that a S3 GSL rear end could handle 240 hp with no problems, being hard on it. Could be wrong about that though.

well, i dont understand. i have a stock 12 a. straight pipes. thats it. i have done a few clutch dumps, but that doesnt explain it. on rearend #3 and #4 i didn't do any dumps. the first 2 went because of 8000 rpm dumps, i have no doubt. perhaps if i change out the entire rearend it will be ok. i will try that next time it goes. but while im here, let me tell you about my first rearend.

the diff was bad when i bought the car. loud hum. i knew it was going. so one day after i had the car about 2 weeks and i heard that the redline was....what red line? oh, no red line when i heard this, i had already ordered the parts to replace the rear. got out on the road. 8000 rpm dump. didnt move. heard all kinds of grinding then just a light scratching. took it apart. first thought was " thats odd, i thought the gears were suposed to have teeth on them" i also thought the ring gear was supposed to be one peice, not 3. go figure? well, that was the first.

but back on track, that is my current parts car, so is the trans problem. i have been very nice to my new one and haven't had any problems yet. maybe the whole axle was just messed up. maybe, but im not gonna go out and test it right now. i don't have the money for if im wrong thanks for the help.

Where in Kentucky are you? There might be a few others in your area.

BTW, I am putting down around 240-250hp at the wheels and I was getting some pretty decent 60' at the track and wheel hopping the crap out of the rear end and nothing has broke, yet. lol But I got an 8.8" ford rear on the side getting ready to go in.

Later
Randy

I would say he is far west judging by his parts car search in his sig. I am originally from Eddyville, and still get down that way occasionally to check on the house and farm. If I can be of any help, let me know. I know my friend Joe has an extra complete rear in his garage. As to whether he would let it go away, who knows. As far as yards down there, there are 3 1st gens for sure at Travis Auto Salvage in Kuttawa that are barely picked over except for motor stuff. Key Auto in Murray probably has several as well.
