misses at idle
i have just purchased an 83 gsl and at idle it will run smooth for about 2 seconds and then miss, then smooth for about 2 or 3 seconds and miss. All i hve worked on are smallblocks and the rotary thang is very new to me. i have no idea what half of the things on this motor are so pls be patient and thorough. thank you

Rotaries work just like any other ICE, you just have a RICE not a PICE.
Your engine should not surge up and down. Should run smooth, all 3 of mine ran perfect. My current one just took some time to get it dialed in. and had a bad ignitor which wasnt intuitive.
Heres the order:
Replace your plugs and wires. Dont use those crappy plugs. Use NGK or NipponDensu. I personally switched to Nippon because they dont foul as quick.
Replace your cap and rotor. Use Mazda parts or use the good kits. Dont use the $18 dollar kits, they wont last. Cost you about 70 to 80 bucks for all the parts.
Now, do your timing. If you dont have it, then buy the Haynes manual, not Chiltons. Follow the instructions for trailing and leading adjustment. Also, make sure that all 4 wires are sparking. Dont want a bad ignitor.
Now as long as your carb hasnt been messed with your should be done. If your cars running lean, it will will surge like that between smooth and rough. If you just had it smoged and it was good, then you should be ok.
If that doesnt solve the problem. Then start looking for a vaccum leak. I dont know about 83, but 84 and 85 have a common leak down below the rear of the intake manifold. But if thats leaking she usually runs rough or stalls all the time, doesnt oscillate.

I've done all of the above on mine (new plugs, rotor, cap, wires, ignitors, coils, there's no vaccum leaks (checked with propane ) and the carb's tuned on an Exhaust Gas Analyzer at school), and it still has the little blip at idle. It's not surging, it's just simply a little blip in the idle speed... like...
whiiiiirrrrrrrrrr.blip.whiiiiiirrrr.blip.whiirr.wh iiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrr
it's so fast that my Tach doesn't even pick it up.

No more blips on my carbed 13B 4 port after I installed a 12V relay (ignition key switch wires were tired and had lots of voltage drop). Now the only time it blips anymore is if the choke is pulled while cold, but as soon as it's in when warm, it's as smooth as a good running FC.
