Need advice from you FB-ers on GSL-SE purchase

Well, aren't we always in the market.

Greetings all, I am a former Gen 2 owner, recently sold just because of too many problems with the car. I have always been in the market for a GSL-SE and recently one has presented itself as an opportunity for me. I would like advice on what to look for when I go to look the car over and drive it. Do the Gen 1 cars have the many problems that the Gen 2's are notorious for... such as the many electrical problems... wiper switch, A/C controls, clock and warning light display, and light switch... not working. Also, does the GSL-SE version of the 13B have the "short-start-flooding" problems like my '86 had?

I would appreciate any advice and pointers of things to watch out for on my search. I already think the price is awesome if the car lives up to his description...

'84 GSL-SE Manual
116K (!!!!!!!)
Light Blue
Brown Leather
Glass Sunroof
All original interior & radio
Interior is in great condition almost like new
Exterior is also in great condition, save some minor rust spots on the bottom (?) of the car.

Asking $1100

Also... does this color combination sound correct... and where can i find paint codes to check against the code on the car? Thanks..

Sounds like a great deal so far. Even if if it is a little rusty, the parts alone on that car are worth more.

Buy it, thats a great deal, especially for a SE. FB's came in an variety of colors, so that is possible. Good luck.

Thanks for the input so far... I just found the website out there with the '84 and '85 sales brochures. These don't say anything about glass sunroofs. Should I be suspicous of this glass one or was this really an option that was never really mentioned, more like an accessory or something like the rear window louvres?

Also, anyone else out there with shopper's advice on things to watch out for on this car specifically that could turn into big repair costs later?

Do all the GSL-SE cars come with Limited Slip?

Thanks all

Glass sunroofs were an option...Kinda like the louvers...Just something someone (Mazda?) made. Mine actually says Mazda on it down in the corner . Also, all GSL's and GSL-SE's have the limited slip rear ends . The main difference between a GSL and a GSL-SE is the 13B FI engine, vs the 12A 4bbl carb'd engine . Also, the GSL-SE's have bigger brake rotors, bigger rims, wider rims, and a few other things...

PS - Ask if the owner still has the metal sunroof. I have an 83 GSL that has a glass sunroof, but no metal one . When we bought the car, it wasnt with the car, and the owner sold it in a garage sale . Its not that bad, just in the winter (if you drive in the winter) or even the colder months, the metal one makes the car just a little warmer cause of the insulation . Plus, if the glass one breaks (I dont know how...But it could happen), you wont have anything to replace it with.

Yeah, spasso, I'm getting out of the FC too. The 1st gens don't have many of the things that die or get wierd on EVERY FRIGGIN 2nd gen. They're much simpler and more direct sports cars. A turn signal relay for an FB is considerably less than $238...

One thing that you really really really should do is go look at this car (which sounds like a very desireable machine!) with a screwdriver and a flashlight. Gently remove the rear storage bins and peer into the holes - look very carefully for the orange cancer of death. The rear-wheel wells are susceptible to rotting from the inside out, as moisture gets trapped between the welded-together overlapping unibody stampings.

I own a mint-appearing '85 GS with 76,000 miles that I bought off the original owner. It is now my favorite parts car because I can put my finger through the rear wheel wells - which house anti-roll-bar mounting points - with little effort. This is a bad case, though, the original owner had driven it through several salt-filled Michigan winters which accelerates the process 10x.

Good luck! And post some pics if you get it!

Welcome to FB club.

As JEC-31 mentioned... the first thing I usally check when purchasing a FB is the rust on the inside cabin wheel wells. Remove the storage compartment, with a screw driver, and you should be able so the damage if any. Other then that, it sounds like you have a sound car on your hands.

In Canada at least the GSL-SE came with both the glass and metal moon roofs, so it isn't listed as an option.

RMD, what paint code on your pop's car is missing on my chart?

Sounds like a winner, Cowboy.
Take it, and smile all the way back to the ranch. The glass roof is very much desired. They can go for as much as $300.

Yes the GSL-SE is suseptable to "short-start" flooding. Just make sure the car is somewhat warmed up before shutting it down.
