Map Light (I Think)

Happy holiday's to all...

This is a quick one, I hope: In my 84 GLS-SE there is a very small light above the dome light and review mirror. It has three positions - center is off, right and left should put it on. I would call it a map light. Regardless, it does not work and I cannot seem to figure out how to open it up to check the bulb or wiring.

Anyone know any tricks???

Thanks.

CAREFULLY take the lens off the bigger dome light (pull down on the edge closest to the windshield). Under that theres like two or three, (maybe four, I cant remember) gold phillips head screws. Take those out, and then the whole mirror/light assembly will come out. Check the bulb, or look for broken contacts. I had a broken wire in mine that I re-soldered and it now works fine. You should be able to see how it works once you get it all out of there. Hope that helps .

Just to confirm your guess...that is the maplight. Pretty useless, don't you think?

I don't think so. The other light is too damn bright. I enjoy the dimmer light. Just my .02 cents.

Yeah I agree, I think the "map light" is just perfect for finding a CD on the highway at night, rather than turning on the bright "dome" light. As far as reading maps, maybe not.

I think the on driver-off-on passenger design of the switch-light is very elegant, a fine example of simplicity of function.

Right on.

If your dome light works, then your 'map' light more likly is burnt out. easy fix, just be carefull the first time pulling
the pieces apart.

That was one of the first cool things on my car that I "discovered" after I bought it. Without a doubt, 1st gens are better designed than the vast majority of cars today.

agreed. Its just right for finding cd's or stuff like that, and its design is indeed quite nice IMO

I will, thanks. In fact, I went out to check it yesterday and now it doesn't even come on. Hopefully it's just the bulb that burnt out because the maplight still works.

My car only had the dome light when I bought it, but I found a parts car with the dual-light setup.

For anyone who's interested, it was an easy install and fitted with the original wiring. Recommended.

Bye,
