You have to remove the driverside rear speaker cover to get to the mechanism.

you can just pry it open also. just be careful not to scratch your paint.
the catch for the solinoid is just a weak piece of metal, worst case senerio you bend it a little and have to bend it back a little. have always done this on my parts cars that have no electrical and have never hurt anything.
the reason it only works sometime is you need to clean the contacts on the switch itself, common problem for the gas and hatch release switches on the 84-85's.

DO NOT pry on the lid. It can and will damage the paint after being done over and over. It will also bend and weaken the tang that secures the lid to the body.

yes, and i intentionally damage all my parts off my parts car. that way i am assured top $$ when i resell them.

the metal tab/latch that holds the solinoid has flex. please dont make me go and post a video showing how easily it opens when pryed.

If I remember correctly all you have to do is just push on the mechanism and it will pop open for you

heres apic of the solinoid. pull the part back thats by my finger in the pic.
now while your in the mood to take things apart pull that switch and clean the contact points and your problems will be over.

if you pry it use a rag to protect your paint and pry with something plastic.

As you can see he does not want to damage his paint. Any amount of prying with a metal object risks the chipping or damage to the surface.

FBslider to do the "Correct" procedure. You will find at the top of the mechanism a sort of slide lever. If you move it from the front towards the rear of the car the door will open. This is the correct procedure to open the gas lid when there is a failure of the electrical system.

Yes there is a white plastic slide that you move towards the taillight (rear) and it will pop open.

Ya know, I can attest to the fact that the little tab sticking up on the solenoid can be reached without removing the inner panel.
Just lift the carpet that covers the taillights, and you can get your hand in there to release it. I had to do this a couple times to get the fuel door open on an 85 I have been working on, cause I didn't wanna hunt up a battery to put in the car.
