manual choke sticking?

i think i have a carb problem. the choke has never worked on this car since i got it so i have always had to hold the gas until it warms up. if i take the gas over 1500 rpm, when i decelerate, the engine will only decelerate back down to 1500 rpm. every now and then it will drop back down to 750 rpm like it is supposed to run, but when i accellerate it stays idling at about 1500 rpm.

my neighbor told me that it is my manual choke sticking but i don't know where it is or how to adjust it so that it is not sticking anymore. the car is an 82 s with a 12a sidemount oil filter

I actually have a similar idle problem after getting a newly rebuilt Nikki from PB&J racing. It ran great just at 1500-1750 RPMs and then just recently my choke started sticking but it has since corrected itself. Still have the idle problem and can't figure it out. Once I get my ignition problem figured out I'm going to try and tackle the idle problem and hopefully fix it. I can't find any vacuum leaks that would be causing the problem so I'm really stumped

There is a sensor with 2 wires on the back of the waterpump housing. This sends the signal to the ecu for the choke hold/release, based on engine temp.

Check the choke cable for binding/wear and all of the choke linkage, including the butterflys. Clean and lube the linkage.

thx troc i will give it a shot. i went and looked and i see the sensor that you mentioned but it looks clean so i guess its time to replace the cables and clean and lube the linkages. thx again trochoid

edit : btw do you happen to know what that little vaccuum(?) operated thing on the drivers side of the engine bay is? it is really close to the strut mount and it has a cable going from it to a linkage on the carb but i can't find info about it in my manual

I believe it's the hot start assist, that or the cruise control, both of which have been gone on mine for a long time. Check the FSM to verify.

sorry to ressurrect but i still have some probs...here is what i did since this post : i checked the sensor on the water pump housing, its operating fine. when i adjusted my mixture it went down and idles at 750-850 rpm and after driving for the first night it dropped down and idled at the correct speed only hesitating a moment at 1100 before dropping back down to the proper range. the next morning when i started it it performed fine, but on the way to work it started doing the same thing but at a lower rpm. its idling at about 1100 - 1200 rpm and will occasianally drop down to normal revs but i wouldn't hold myh breath waiting for it to do so.

could this possibly be vaccuum related?

oh yeah..this thing here ^ is not vaccuum operated like i thought. it is electrical, but i still can't figure out what it does. the cable goes from this device to the bottom center hole on the carb linkage support/bracket/whatever that holds all of the linkage cables. it connects to the third linkage from the right when you look at the carb from the drivers side of the engine bay
