Put the thermostat back in, or better yet replace it with one from the Mazda dealership. You should be able to tighten that belt up, and maybe you should go ahead and replace that while you are at it...

Couple other things you might consider looking at. Have you had your radiator fluid changed or drained for any reason. You could have an air buble in the watter system. Check your oil preshure the next time you run it that may have something to do with y its overheating.

i found if you dissconect the water hose off the engine just bellow the oil filter(if you have a fmoc) other wise theres two..

then run a garden hose in the radiator it will help flush the rusty water.

but first disconect the radiator hoses and try flushing that first them do the hole system

You need the thermostat, and it needs to be an oem Mazda one. Flush and fill the the cooling system, amke sure you drain the coolant not only from the bottom of the radiator, but the the drain plug at the bottom of the block on the driver's side too.

Replace the belt and tension it to spec, total belt deflection, 1/2 way between the pulleys should be 3/8" of an inch. If you have done the rats nest removal, install either a yoohoo belt or dual alt pulley.

If that doesn't remedy the overheating problem, have the radiator serviced by a radiator shop, or replace it. Water pump may also need replacing as the impeller blades tends to wear/degrade over time, particularly on a cooling system tha has not had regular maintinance.

is it the bolt bottom center of the block same iron as the oil filler neck or
is it on the back of the block... just around the corner from where one of the fmoc lines hook up..

Should be in the center iron. The bolt in the rear iron, on the beehive equipped engines, leads to the oil system.
