made my short shifter today

made my short shifter today. it was an all day thing, but i love it, its not harder to shift, or notchy.. its prefect. i cut about 1.5" off the top, and put it in.. thats about all. i can catch gears alot harder now. its just jumps from 1st to 2nd.. it scared the **** out of my girlfriend becasue she wasnt expecting it. i saved my stock on incase i end up not liking it. but i dont think that will happen. ill post pictures later, im not at home..

edit: mantis, i lost the link to your site, but how much do those shift boots you have go for? im interested in one.

and a close up with the boot. you can see how before, the ball was too high, not its too low. thast why i want one of those boots from mantis so i dont have to worry about it. i will probably make a tach weld near the top for the boot to sit on. i dont know. but you can tell here that the rubber boot is cramed down there. but like i said before, i LOVE this, my header should be in tuesday, racing beat promised it would be sent off thursday, and hopefully the end of this week, beginning of next week my whole exhaust will be done.. now off the springs, shocks, and sway bars

its not actually a "short shifter" its just a "shorter" shifter. i cut 1.5-1.75" off the 'shaft' part between the top where it begins to tapper down, and where the bushing is ( before the bushing on the shaft) then took that peice completely out because i didnt want melt out all that rubber, which was a bitch on the little bit it had to melt off. then i took a scrap peice of aluminum that was laying around, and propped the top part up so when i welded it, it would be straight. stuck the bottom half in the top half, and went to town with the welder. then i put EVERYTHING up, go over to the car, install it. works good, then i notice i left a bushing out, so i take everything back out (those three bolts were a bitch with that rubber piece that was around it, which i eventually cut. so i put the bushing in, tighten everything down, and not only would the shifter not move, i broke it off. i was pissed off at first, and was about to give up and stick my stock one back in, but thought it would be worth it and i would get to say "i did it myself" so i drug all the welding ****, and crap back out, grinded down the shitty weld, redid it, and i hit it acouple times in a vise to ensure it wouldnt break off with a hammer. put it back in without the bushing, and it works great. i catch gears alot harder now. next step, exhaust, then shiftboot since its a cosmetic thing, and im all about getting my exhaust system done right now. sorry this is long. but im kind of proud i did this completely by myself. i was told it would be notchy, and harder to shift because of less leverage between shifts, which i agreed. but i had to fell for myself. but i love it, its prefect. its not notchy or hard to shift at all. i recommend it, it took about 4 hours, but i think it you get it right the first time and dont break it. it takes less. but im glad i broke it there instead of on the road between shifts.

*sigh* ok im done.. :-)

edit: and the **** was off of one of my friend's rx7, whcih is sitting growing weeds around it with no life. it was custom made by a machinist. i love it though, plus it was free
