its not actually a "short shifter" its just a "shorter" shifter. i cut 1.5-1.75" off the 'shaft' part between the top where it begins to tapper down, and where the bushing is ( before the bushing on the shaft) then took that peice completely out because i didnt want melt out all that rubber, which was a bitch on the little bit it had to melt off. then i took a scrap peice of aluminum that was laying around, and propped the top part up so when i welded it, it would be straight. stuck the bottom half in the top half, and went to town with the welder. then i put EVERYTHING up, go over to the car, install it. works good, then i notice i left a bushing out, so i take everything back out (those three bolts were a bitch with that rubber piece that was around it, which i eventually cut. so i put the bushing in, tighten everything down, and not only would the shifter not move, i broke it off. i was pissed off at first, and was about to give up and stick my stock one back in, but thought it would be worth it and i would get to say "i did it myself" so i drug all the welding shit, and crap back out, grinded down the shitty weld, redid it, and i hit it acouple times in a vise to ensure it wouldnt break off with a hammer. put it back in without the bushing, and it works great. i catch gears alot harder now. next step, exhaust, then shiftboot since its a cosmetic thing, and im all about getting my exhaust system done right now. sorry this is long. but im kind of proud i did this completely by myself. i was told it would be notchy, and harder to shift because of less leverage between shifts, which i agreed. but i had to fell for myself. but i love it, its prefect. its not notchy or hard to shift at all. i recommend it, it took about 4 hours, but i think it you get it right the first time and dont break it. it takes less. but im glad i broke it there instead of on the road between shifts.
*sigh* ok im done.. :-)
edit: and the knob was off of one of my friend's rx7, whcih is sitting growing weeds around it with no life. it was custom made by a machinist. i love it though, plus it was free
