Lug Locks

OK, I have a single lug lock on each of my 4 spoke rims. The bad thing about it is.. I don't have the key. I did have it, but I have no godly idea as to where I put it.

Do any of you know any tricks to get them off? I don't care if I mess them up, I have 4 spare normal lugs to put on there.

The locks look like a star with curved points. The GoodYear dealer said $60 to drill them out... I don't think so...

See if you can get a socket that doesn't quite fit, and bash it on. Then undo it. Of course, you'll need four sockets, but it might work. I recently had the head of a nut brake off on the front of the car. I had to get a nut welded on to get it off. The local smash repairer did this for me pretty cheap.

Good luck.

PS. Have another look for the key first.

See ya!

There's no way a socket can be used to get it off.. the outside of the lug is completely round... it's on the part of the lug that faces you... there is a "cut" into it where you stick an adapter on and it has the male piece to fit in there so you can get them off... welding a nut on there would be cool, except there are 4 of them...

Have you tried going around to a few wheel shops, I don't mean tire places, and asking if they have anything to get it off. That's what I tried first but because it was a stuffed lug they couldn't help. There is a chance though that a performance wheel centre may carry a range of keys... maybe even for yours.

OK, that's what I thought a pipe wrench was... but that's way too big to use... I think its' going to be impossible to grab the OUTSIDE of the lug for two reasons.

1. It's round, completely round.
2. It's inset into the wheel, so getting anything in there is going to be hard.

Thats the whole point of getting a socket thats SMALLER than the outside of the lock, so you can pound it on with a hammer. It will work, I've done it several times. Lug locks are cheaply made and give surprisingly easy.

Hmm, banged around on it for about 20 minutes (mind you I need to have this done on all 4 wheels). I couldn't get the octogon shape, nor the 16pt star sockets on it... I banged and banged... it ended up tearing my sockets up before the lug...

Sockets are craftsman, so I can get them replaced now...

Try a big hammer and a center-punch, or a regular punch.

(Center-punches are used to "mark a spot" on metal, so a drill bit will bite into the metal at that spot.. regular punches are flat on both ends, and are used to "punch" something out that's stuck in something.)

Anyway - use a big hammer and a punch, and whack at the locking lug-nuts and WORK them loose, know what I mean?

But this won't be easy.. good luck!

I hate to be a smart ***, but a pipe wrench is made to work on round objects, like pipe. Hence the name "pipe wrench" . But if you dont think it will work, thats up to you. Could you try drilling into them and using an easy out or something similar to that? Maybe even try going to a parts store or wheel shop and buying another set of locking lug nuts that has the same kind of key, and then use the key and return them? I dont know. I kinda like the idea of welding bolts or nuts onto them. Im sure you have some spare nuts or something laying around, if not, theyre only like 10-25 cents each at a hardware store. Weld them on, and find a socket or wrench that fits em .

I think mar3 has the same type of locks as you..... I think*.... ask him....

i drilled a hole through the side of one of mine... and it took me 30min.... and them i stuck a screw drive in it.. one of those short one.. and then I put wieght on it... broke the damn screwdriver so I am screwed.... any one got anyideas? oh yeah...hahah... they are on TIGHT.... and.... to top it off... they are rusted on..

I don't want to be a smart *** either, but how the **** are you going to get a pipe wrench into an inset hole?

You're not.

Are you sure they aren't just stock lug bolts? The head comes off the stock ones and its splined underneath.
