Hey guys.
I have a 1979 baby, I’ve been thinking about lowering it and getting some other rims for it.
Should I? And if so, what kits have you guys use and wheels? Some pictures would be great. Or maybe just bigger rims and wider tires.

Thats a really sweet looking SA. You can lower using RB springs (you can even cut one round off as well). The RB spring uncut may actually raise the height a bit. The other option if you can find them are progressive springs (no one sells these new anymore), they provide a little smoother ride until compress down. Then you will need shocks that can control those springs. The KYB gas shocks sold by RB or Mazdatrix cannnot deal with the RB spring rebound very well. I'm thinking of getting some KONI adjustables up front (84/85 MR2 spec) and some KYB AGX adjustables in the rear (80s Mustang Fox body spec).

Tim, I'm surprised you haven't burned those Dunlops off the car yet 😝.

 

Since I'm not doing DGGR this year, they will last a bit longer. Great tires but terrible in cold and wet. I need to refurb my waffles again and get the TAs in 13 inch. That way I can run those in the cold months.

Any chance you can make it down here in your car? Steve and I are the only first gens at the C&C lately.

 

tokyco blue and b&g springs are good enough....

 

Finding fresh, new ones is the challenge.

 

B&G and Tokico do not make parts for us anymore.

I placed an order for the b&g 50.1.018 in early March through an online vendor. Vendor kept giving me the run around so I called B&G direct. They gave me an ETA of May and said he is aware that there is demand for the product.

Tim, maybe for June, the C&C here in VB is not very good and would be great to see you guys. Hopefully I'll get some of the stuff fixed on the car in May.

Considering the FB's proclivity for bottoming out, I'd not worry too much about lowering it. However, wheels and tires are a must, as no decent tire exists that fits a 13" rim. Well, except track-only tires.

4x110 wheels are almost impossible to find, but you can run a hub adapter to 4x100 or 4x114.3. Then all you need is a wheel with a large offset, to move the tires back towards the center of the car (since the adapter spaces them). I was weary of bending a cast rim (and couldn't afford forged) so I got brand new Dorman 939-100 steel 15"x6 wheels with a 4x100 bolt pattern that are supposed to go on a chevy cobalt. Now I have my pick of tires They don't look half bad, but they are no alloys.

If you want the style, just find some decently high (negative) offset rims, and you can get a bolt pattern adapter. Just make sure the adapter itself is hubcentric. Its ok if the wheel has to be lugcentric, but not ok if the adapter AND wheel are lugcentric.

 

...and if you lower, don't forget to cut your bump stomps by the same amount.

This is the single biggest improvement in ride quality and traction that it took me years to figure out, I'm somewhat ashamed to say!

 

They were pretty much the go-to over here in aussieland. From meemory you want to stay away from the "super low" and just get "low"
