Lovely Vibrations

Alright, Now that I've got the accleration thing figured out I'm turning my attention to some interesting virbations that don't seem right to me. (Then maybe I should work on that shaky idle, eh? =)

So here's what I'm asking:
- Should the engine scare me when I rev about ~5.5krpm? It starts vibrating immensly at about that point. It doesn't seem to affect performance... Just seems awful loud to me.
(Up until then it sounds beautiful)

- I started out with a vibration problem in fifth gear when I first put the car on the road (sometimes accompanied by a whining noise). I can deal with that.
But now the problem seems to show up in fourth gear as well. But it's intermittent.
Example: When I'm accelerating toward 55~60 mph and shifting into fourth at 45~50 mph I have a vibration from 50~65 mph. If I shift to fifth gear the vibration lessens. If I then shift back to fourth I can sometimes get rid of the vibration; other times this isn't the case.

I havn't checked the oil in the tranny or the rear end.
Should I do this first?

Also, Upon searching for "transmission rebuild" in the 1st gen forum it appears that the bearings are fairly easy to obtain through normal channels. Is this something I need to be thinking about given these symptoms? What are the classic signs of bad bearings in a transmission?

(My transmission whines a lot especially in the lowers gears)

Thanks in advance,

Matt

yes! you should always check ALL of your fluids. they make the difference in the life or death of your car.

i had this problem just before the rear eccentric shaft bearing failed!!!! unfortunatly i miss diagnosed it as a gearbox problem as it only appeared to happen in 5th gear, not long later then input bearing on the gearbox failed, it was the vibration from the dieing engine baring that caused the weaker gearbox bearing to fail first!! (and i was 2000Km from home)

so i got a 12AT gearbox installed, and guess what! the problem wasnt fixed, about 2000 Km later when i got home the engine rear eccentric shaft bearing failed! Doh!
all that replaced, new, lightened flywheel, clutch (the old one was oil soaked) all is fine, just today, the apex seals went! Doh!

oh well, everything in 3's they say!

Check your motor mounts too. Make sure they are tight.
