ok so i have a 1985 rx7 gs 12a NA ive had it for a month now to this day it was a major fixer upper but she runs pretty damn well for someone who has never known much about rotary engines until now. anywho i was taking her out to work the other day and as i took her to about 3500 rpm i heard this really loud squeal coming from the car....cant seem to place it anywhere as to front or rear end....now it wont do it as soon as i start her up but after driving her for 10 to 15 min she does the squealy thing....im sorta at a loss here so any help would be fantastic....

 

Without having much info to go on, it's really difficult to give an accurate answer. However, if the air pump is not on the car, and it only has the alt belt driving the water pump, that's the place to start checking. The alt belt doesn't have enough contact area with the water pump pulley, and is very prone to slipping at higher RPM. The older the belt, the lower the RPM it will start to slip.

 

so what kind of info would you need on it i can give you anything lol open book nd i have a few hours to spare. thanks btw.

 

oh right and as for the air pump that is still attached but i was thinking of removing it and the cat. sometime soon

 

Well, for starters, is the air pump in place, with a belt on it? If not, see above.
If the air pump is place, check the tension and condition of the belts. Loose or well worn belts will slip. Especially under the load of high RPM, and the drag of the fan.

 

brand new belts and the tension is ok....checked it yesterday cuz i thought that they felt a lil loose

 

Open the hood, start the engine then stand over the engine bay and rev until the squeal starts. If the squeal is rpm dependent, then it's either belt slippage or a bearing failing in the waterpump, airpump or power steering. Belt deflection at the midpoint between the pulleys should be less than 1/2".

There is also the odd chance that the squeal may be a vcuum leak.

 

well i know its rpm related but only happens when the engine is warm.....otherwise i can take her up to 7000 and no squeal

 

One way to determine if it's the belts, when it starts squealing, shut down the engine, soap the belts then restart.

 

soap? as in like bar of soap or detergent? no way?

 

Bar soap, that will stop the squealing if the belts are slipping. If it does, then either the belts are old or loose. Apply soap when engine is NOT running.
