loud noise in tranny area????

loud noise in tranny area????

Ok guys i've got a problem with my 83 rx7. Thats got me stumped. There's a rattling noise in the tranny/clutch area, but here's the thing when i push the clutch pedal to the floor it goes away. when i release the pedal it comes back. whats the problem.. can't be the slave or master cylinder because there new and i've bleed the lines.

One more thing the car doesn't go into reverse at all. I've tried all those idea's with putting it into another gear then reverse and it ain't budging.

My reverse light's stay on till i turn off the car. why would they be on if my car wont go into reverse.

wonder if there is some dirt or a rock in the mechanism. That would explain the light and why you can't shift into that gear.

The noise you hear might be your pilot bearing. This is located inside the ecentric shaft. When you apply the clutch the tranny shaft pulls out from the engine. When you let off the clutch it goes back in. Since your tranny is finished,the noise you hear is probably comming from your tranny.

Correction,
The pilot bearing is mounted in the end of the crankshaft. Its purpose is to keep the transmission input shaft centered. The shaft does NOT move in and out (or shouldn't). The clutch arm, or fork moves the throw-out bearing and it presses on the "fingers" of the pressure plate which in turn releases the clutch disk and allows it spin between the PP and flywheel.
So,,,,if you press on the clutch, you then "use" the throw-out bearing. Therefore THAT is when you would hear a noise if it were the "TO" bearing. At the same time since you are pressing in the clutch, the transmission shaft is allowed to spin free relative to the engine (they are decoupled). This action is what allows you to change gears. Also, a noise at that time could be a bad pilot bearing because the engine and tranny are, or could be turning at different rates.
Now then, when you release the clutch pedal the TO bearing moves away from the PP fingers and allows it to "grip" the clutch disc. At that point the TO bearing is just sitting there and not spinning, AND since the tranny and engine are now turning at the same speed, the pilot bearing is no longer being used. However you have now put a load on the tranny input shaft.
OK so if I have said this correctly,,,,,,if you hear a noise when the clutch depressed, it is more likely to be the TO bearing or pilot bearing, both of which are being used. If you hear the noise when the clutch is released, it is more likely comming from the tranny input shaft bearing because the other 2 bearing are not being used.
If you have the clutch out and the tranny in nuetral, the only thing spinning relative to each other is the input shaft to the rest of the tranny.
No matter which one is bad, you have to pull the tranny to fix it. Accepted proccedure is to replace BOTH the TO and pilot bearings. If there is any leakage from the tranny or if there is eccessive play (wiggle) in the input shaft, you then replace the tranny bearing and seal as well.
Note: a bad pilot bearing may cause the tranny bearing to go bad as well because the shaft is not kept centered AND it allows the shaft to wobble because the clutch may not be centered.
One more thing, If the pilot bearing is bad and causing the tranny shaft to spin even when you have the clutch engaged, it can make it hard to impossible to put the tranny in gear, because it is just like NOT using the clutch.

The tranny is likely to be worn out...time for a rebuild. Try a good synthetic gear lube in there to nurse it along in the meantime.

If it helps, my car sometimes gets stuck trying to shift into reverse as well. Either that, or it grinds the gears shifting into reverse with the clutch all the way down. I think it's probably a pretty common problem. A humming/rattling noise sometimes comes from the tranny when I'm downshifting on hot days at low speeds.

I don't think that's what your looking for though.

hey i have the same prob in my 85 se it has worn out main tranny bearing and has the same thing you discribed. Reaplace you tranny or add a little atf to you tranny fluid
