Spoilers don't do jack on most cars except look like a park bench has been bolted to the trunk...

However, handling IS a very important part of performance (there's engine performance, handling performance, etc) and depending on the car a strut tower bar can make a noticeable difference with performance handling.

Not defending the Lugen you're bringing to our attention, but pointing ot that handling is as important as other performance aspects of a car.

the spoiler on the first gen is a performance mod (the one the added as standard to the MK2's) as it reduces the drag coeficient of the car ... pity its made of rubber

very true i agree with you but personally i would have made another catagory that was labeled handling upgrades performance or something like that, the way he listed it it seemed like he was talking about hp or tq gains like any other ricer on the road

Why in the world would you want to do something like that?

Yup, there are 2 types of drag (aerodynamic). Your form drag and your skin friction drag.

Your form drag is the pressure difference between the front and back off the car. The skin friction is the resistance between the skin surface and passing air.

1st gens have a problem with pressure drag. That's why all new cars have the lip on the back. As the air comes off the top, back of the car (glass hatch), it begins to seperate and produce vortexes as the air tries to reattach. This produces a low pressure zone in the back of the car.

By adding the spoiler (which really needs to go up higher along the hatch, but would look ugly) the air seperates sharpely and does not produce reattaching vortexes. So you raise the pressure in the back.

That's all.

spot on ! ... the best areodynamic shape for the back of a car is to have it tapering to a knife edge ... not very good for street cars but perfect for GT cars and single seaters etc. ( take a look at an F1 car for example) the next best thing is to have the car start to taper and then end abrupltly with some sort of spoiler to kick the air flow up away frm the end of the car and prevent the vortecies (spelling ) that speider was talking about.
thats why they had to add a small spoiler to the audi TT ... the rounded end of the TT is a poor shape and has a problem in that the areodynamic effects vary drastically if you move the direction of the air flow (side wind or cornering) The original design for the lotus Elise called for a smooth rear edge too but they had to add a small spiler to the rear edge to reduce rear lift and improve stabilty of the areodynamics.
