Losing power, bucking and stalling uphill

Hi everybody,
As stated in the title my 83 GSL has the following problem. When I'm driving up a steep hill the car starts to buck and lose power eventually stalling (even flooring the accelerator won't help once it's started). The car will always start immediatly and run well until I hit the next steep hill and the problem will happen again. This happens about 85% of the time and I've noticed it happens in 2nd gear at about 3000rpm (I don't know if this matters but it's what I've observed). I'm running a can of seafoam in the gas tank and I've cleaned the ***** out of the carb but it hasn't helped. I'm thinking the fuel filter might be clogged so I'll start there hopefully this weekend.

Do you guys have any other sugestions?

Cheers,

Luis

Fuel filter and other tune up items are a good place to start. I would also consider doing a fuel pump volume test after replacing the filter.

As the others have stated fuel filter first. Take the old filter and cut it apart. If you find small rust particles, drain and flush the fuel tank.

Check your CAT, bet it's collapsed and is choking the motor when it's pulling hard.
You gotta exhale after you inhale.....
Happened to me.

My friends gsl would do the exact same thing. He had a giant hole in his gas tank and it was starved for gas on hills. Your gas tank could be rusting out and its clogged your fuel filter.

A clogged cat will cause power issues all the time, not just going uphill as his problem does.

My cat caused me to have issues when pulling hard, it started and ran fine untill you floored it or tried to press the motor in to working hard....so yes you are correct, but I still think it's the CAT.

Thanks for the replies everybody,

I've been busy with school this last week so I haven't had a chance to change the fuel filter yet but I'll get on that this week and see what happens.

Cheers,

Luis

P.S. Slammed_GSL, I don't have enough posts to reply to your pm yet.

I just wanted to thank everybody who contributed to troubleshooting this problem. It was the fuel filter after all, the gas coming out of it was full of black sediment and there was a piece of rubber inside it no rust though (thankfully). I took it for a nice ride up a couple of hills and it runs really smooth.

Cheers,

Luis

It sounded like the right one-liner to use after my first post in this thread. Short and sweet as in Yay it was the right solution to your question! No need to type a bunch to help this guy.

I got the one liner , I just meant I shouldn't cheer because now that the easy fix is done I get to move on to the much more tedious task of tracing a short.
