on the side with the fuel door. it will be towards the front of the tank on that side. you will need to drop the tank to really access it but you must loosen everything to wedge your hand in and pull off the connector by pulling down. chances are the connections on the gauge are your problem. you will see them once you drop the tank. extra tip: run it low on gas, otherwise it will be a handfull. any questions, feel free to ask on dropping it. since i've been battling rust/gunk chunks, i've dropped mine around 10 times in the last 2 months. here is a pic with the sensor's location.

oh yeah, the reason i go into that detail is that the ground the wire runs to on the chassis, where ever that is, will probably not be the problem. however corrosion can wear away at the hookup on the sensor.

You can gain access to the fuel level sender unit plug easily without dropping the gas tank. There should be a plastic shield that sits behind the left rear tire which shields the fuel filler neck and the sender unit. It is held in by 3 bolts I believe. Remove those bolts and you should be able to see the possible corroded connector by looking behind the rear wheel. It makes it easier if you have the left rear wheel off If you want a closer inspection. My fuel guage was not working either and it turned out the connector on the gas tank was completely corroded and unusable. If you need to change that sender unit, you need to take the gas tank out to do it. I picked up a new sender unit for I think $40 from an online parts source. Oh, one more thing, the connector should have 3-wires, 2 yellow and one green.

You can change the fuel level sender out without dropping the tank, you'll just need a short screwdriver.

my sender was rusted, the arm that should show the fuel level, just gently removed the rust carfull not to break any wire wraps (but i did, just twisted it back to gether thou), u can test it by hooking the wires to it and turn on the key and move the lever, u should see the gas guage move on dash, i have a spare if u need it, let me know.......

I got it from Atlanta Rx-7

Man!, I tried that with the short screw driver but I ended up cracking the tank requiring me to recently replace the tank and sender. It was way tight, I just can't believe it can be done with a short screwdriver, getting the leverage on the screwdriver to get those screws to turn was very difficult too, plus the dirt that had built up inside those screws didn't make it any easier. I got a few of those screws out but couldn't get to the ones furthest back, hence I got frustrated and ended up cracking the tank I guess if you did it then I guess it can be done. You didn't lower the tank at all???!?!

Nope, just took the plastic panel out of the way and swaped the non-working one out in a total of two minutes. The screws were surprisingly easy to turn.
